The action followed a letter of inquiry to U.S. Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger by Anti De- famation League national direc- tor Nathan Perlmutter. The League said it had been in- formed by the Defense Secretary that the three have been dis- missed from the Corps following initial reports that they were "involved in activities of the White Patriot Party," formerly known as the Confederate Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. An investigation into "allega- tions of misconduct" is still con- tinuing, Mr. Weinberger told the League. The Defense Department is seeking to determine whether other Marines were involved in White Patriot activities in North Carolina and if they had any connection with the Party's paramilitary activities. Mile Rd. RiX6i4-MY L.A. Federation Los Angeles(JTA) — The Jewish Federation Council board of directors has instructed the Jewish Community Foundation, its $60 million endowment arm, to divest itself of all holdings in companies presently doing busi- ness in South Africa. This action, taken at the board's July meetina , makes it one of less than a b handful of American Jewish federations to join the growing economic boycott of South Africa. The foundation is the largest clearin- ghouse of Jewish philanthropic endowment opportunities in southern California and the third largest Jewish community foun- dation in the nation. The founda- tion has a portfolio of $12.5 mil- lion in income-generating funds, and less than four percent is in- vested in companies doing busi- ness in South Africa. Howard Miller, a newly ap- pointed chairperson of the JFC community relations committee, stated that the federation board's decision mirrors the Jewish communitys' abhorrence of ra- cism and discrimination in all its forms. In its debate, the board consid- ered the financial security of the community, relations with the Los Angeles black community and the implications regarding the nature of business operations of other companies in its portfolio of investments. JFC President Stanley Hirsh recognised several attempts to include in a divestiture policy those countries boycotting Israel, and nations such as the Soviet Union, which deny human rights to their Jewish citizens. Such ef- forts were defeated in the interest of maintaining the focus of the action. IGIU11111 .
