S
tied "Jazz, Ballad & Blues," fea-
tures White on guitar and Robin
Batteau on violin ... It will be a
tribute to Josh White, Sr., and
feature instrumental ar-
rangements of his favorite num-
bers.
Performing professionally
since the age of 4, White co-
starred with Lillian Gish in his
first Broadway show when he
was 9 . . . He has since starred in
five more Broadway shows.
White's musical conquests run
from Carnegie Hall and Lincoln
Center to Las Vegas and virtu-
ally every important folk and jazz
festival in Europe and North
America . . . He worked with Bill
"Bojangles" Robinson, Paul
Robeson, Leadbelly and Woody
Guthrie.
Because of his belief and works
in the cause of universal brother-
hood, White received the "Harry
Chapin Award for Contributions
to Humanity" in 1984 from the
National Association of Campus
Activities . . . and the "Key to the
City" from Detroit and Lansing.
MARRIOTT CONTINUES
expansion of its moderately
priced Courtyard division in the
Detroit area with opening of a
third hotel in Southfield . . . The
new Courtyard by Marriott hotel
is near south service drive inter-
section of Northwestern Highway
and Lahser.
Marriott already has courtyard
hotels open in Warren and Troy
. . . with a fourth scheduled for
Dearborn in December ... Sites
also under contract by Marriott
are near Detroit Airport and in
Livonia ... with specific interest
in developing additional locales
in Novi, Northville and a second
site in Southfield.
Marriott's expansion in the
greater Detroit area is unprece-
dented in moderately-priced lodg-
ing segment, with eight to ten
Courtyard- hotels planned for
construction here within next
three to five years.
The 148-room Southfield hotel
is on 4.4 acres ... and resembles
a contemporary residence with
mature landscaping and terraced
grounds . . Guests can relax in
the central courtyard with indoor
swimming pool and socializing
area, or the indoor whirlpool and
game room.
Guest rooms are larger than
most in the moderately-priced
category and include king-size
beds in a majority of rooms .
Also featured are separate dres-
sing areas, a large work area
with desk, telephone with 25-foot
extension cord, sofa bed, in-room
coffee service . . . (boiling water is
always on tap) . . . and remote-
control television with cable and
free HBO movies.
The hotel has 100-seat restau-
rant and lounge located in the
lobby area . . . plus two confer-
ence rooms available for small
meetings of 25 or fewer people.
Many of the rooms open into
the courtyard area . . . which is
enclosed for guest privacy . . . The
residential environment at
Courtyard hotels is enhanced by
interior corridors that allow
guests to enter their rooms from
inside the hotel rather than the
outside.
