Broomfield Record
On Disarmament

I was deeply affected by the ar-
ticle (June 20) on Lana Pollack
urging us to look at a political
representative's whole voting re-
cord. Our community does tend to
be one-issue oriented and Repre-
sentative (William) Broomfield is
a perfect example of that ten-
dency.
I do not live in his district, but
if I did I would be aware that he
has voted against every bill limit-
ing nuclear build-up and testing.
His record is impeccable, how-
ever, in support of Israel. Is it not
possible to have a liberal candi-
date who will espouse both sup-
port for Israel and nuclear dis-
armament?

As a resident of Southfield we
have such a candidate. Why is
Broomfield's constituency so
complacent?

I just came home from a fun-
eral and was upset and sad at
how a wonderful, kind woman
had passed on. But to top things
off, a so-called grown man had
the audacity to come to the fun-
eral and cemetery wearing
shorts. I personally think it is
awful when women go to funerals
wearing slacks.
Some respect must be shown
for the living as well as the dead.
I think funeral homes should post
signs: "Proper Attire Required."

nationality .of another? Does the
question of dual loyalty not arise?
It seems that those who query
the ethics of "Dual Loyalty" con-
fuse that term with "Divided
Loyalty! The latter term cer-
tainly implies a
an impoceabTe morality. A
country is entitled to its citizens'
undivided loyalty and if the hold-
ing of two passports makes this
impossible then the holder must
content himself with one. But
why should the holding of two
citizenships mean divided loy-
alty? Does allegiance to both
one's parents mean divided alle-
giance? Can one be loyal to only
one friend?
The Encyclopedia Britannica
Dictionary defines "loyalty" as
"devoted allegiance," and "alle-
giance" as "fidelity . . . to a gov-
ernment from a citizen, to a
superior, or to a principle." This
is the whole point. As long as the
two countries to whom one owes
loyalty don't clash in principle,
there is no reason why dual loy-
alty should be deprecated. The
United States, Britain, Canada,
Australia are all countries which
are devoted to freedom and
democracy, the value of human
life and the importance of the in-
dividual. These are all principles
to which Israel is also dedicated.
Why, then, should there be any
objection to one's owing loyalty to
one of these countries in addition
to Israel?
A different situation would
arise if one of these countries
were a dictatorship not adhering
to these ideals, but this is a prob-
lem which does not arise. And if,
sometimes, we may be forced to
disagree with the policy of our
country of origin, don't we occa-
sionally distgree with the policy
of Israel also? Does this make us
disloyal?
Is everything smooth sailing,
then? Not really! When England
comes to play Israel at soccer, the
habit of years takes over and I
find myself willy-nilly rooting for
England. But then, my "Sabra"
children make up for it by rooting
for Israel, and roundly condemn
me for lacking the true faith!
