Jewish people is a priority com-
mitment" of the Assemblies of
God Church.
The reason for the reversal was
outlined by Robert W. Pirtle, the
Assemblies' National Home Mis-
sions director: "The `Jewishness'
Approach holds the hope of se-
eing tens of thousands of Jewish
people saved."
The Assemblies of God lost lit-
tle time in concretizing its new-
found priority. The sect's Valley
Forge Christian College in
Phoenixville, Pa. quickly in-
itiated a "Jewish Studies De-
partment"to equip pastors for the
work of Jewish evangelism.
Forty-seven deceptive "Mes-
sianic Jewish synagogues" have
been established under As-
semblies of God auspices in
"strategic locations" (read: large
Jewish populations) throughout
America, thus putting the sect in
control of more than half of the 80
"Messianic Jewish" front groups
of all denominations in this coun-
try.
Specialized divisions have been
set up within the Assemblies of
God framework for particular
Jewish target groups, including
senior citizens, Soviet Jews, Is-
raeli immigrants, and prisoners.
In the words of Rev. Martin
("Moishe") Rosen, founder of

"Jews for Jesus," "the Assemblies
of God are the main proponents"
of the "Messianic Jewish" move-
ment.
The Assemblies of God also
sponsor annual conferences
(entitled "Ruach"), designed to
equip gentiles for effective
evangelism to Jews. Written
materials distributed at these
conferences are disseminiated
widely, and in the past have in-
cluded such gems as: "Men
should be required to wear yar-
mulkes . . . it is a means of corn-
municating to the people that the
message we are sharing is really
Jewish . . . Your teaching must
be Jewish in style. It should be
filled with Hebrew or Yiddish ex-
pressions. This warms up the at-
mosphere and helps people relax
. . . There are many quiet-
mannered Jews, but the noisy
ones seem to hold the limelight."
The Rev. Warren Jacobs, a
Methodist serving with the Na-
tional Council of Churches, has
decried the Assemblies' targeting
of Jews as a form of "subtle anti-
Semitism." Whatever the quality
of its anti-Semitism, the denomi-
nation's incursion into the "He-
brew Christian" mission field has
been anything but subtle.
Neither should be our Jewish
communal response.
