"widespread discomfort" over
Jerusalem's relations with the
racist South African govern-
ment. He also renewed his
contacts with Dr. Shimshon
Zelniker, an advisor to Prime
Minister Shimon Peres and
cato u—oir- Frinca at •tseit
-
Bed College, who agreed to
become the "field director" of
the project.
Spiegel reported back to
Hayden on the positive re-
sponse in Israel. Hayden, in
turn, tried vainly to reach
Tutu to arrange a meeting
with Zelniker.
Matters seemed at an im-
passe, when a fortuitous hap-
penstance presented a new
opening. In December 1984,
Hayden and Fonda went to
Aspen, Colorado to meet with
some old friends, the widow
and family of the late Senator
Robert Kennedy, and to get in
some skiing.
One day on the slopes, Hay-
den struck up an acquain-
tance with a man who turned
out to be a wealthy, liberal
Jewish industrialist from
Johannesburg, with close ties
to
After much phoning and
telexing across three con-
tinents, Tutu and some of his
associates agreed to a meet-
ing at the home of the Johan-
nesburg businessman in June
1985. The Israeli government
could not be officially in-
volved, and the center agreed
to carry the ball. .
Goren and his three col-
leagues quietly raised money
to send Zelniker to South
Africa, but once there it
seemed that the laboriously
arranged meeting would
prove to be a waste of time.
"For two hours, Tutu and
his friends beat on me,"
Zelniker afterwards told
Spiegel, persistently attack-
ing Israel and its policies.
Zelniker was ready to get up
and leave, when the mood
suddenly shifted. "Now, what
shall we talk about?" calmly
asked his recent tormentors.
Zelniker proposed the idea
of selecting groups of blacks,
of standing within their corn-
munities and unquestionable
anti-apartheid credentials, for
three to four weeks of techni-
cal, organizational and leader-
ship training at the Histad-
rut's Afro-Asian Institute.
Over the past 15 years, the
institute has conducted train-
ing courses for about 15,000,
mainly Third World, people,
about half from black Africa.
By the meeting's end, Ilitu's
stance had changed from
hostility to, at least, neutrali-
ty, and while he was not will-
ing to get involved in the proj-
ect, neither did he oppose it.
Encouraged, Zelniker spent
another two weeks in South
Africa, meeting with other
black leaders and the nucleus
of the group that would arrive
in Israel the following year.
