MICHIGAN'S LARGEST SELECTION OF

the entire Jewish community. We
will not tolerate misrepresenta-
tion of something as kosher
which is not kosher."
Rabbi Grubner added that
Michael Berke, acting executive
vice president of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation; Leon Cohan,
president of the Jewish Commu-
nity Council; and Rabbi Irwin
Groner of Cong. Shaarey Zedek
had been consulted about the
situation and supported the
Vaad's action.
Meat purchased at the store
should not be consumed, the rab-
bis advised. Poultry should have
a metal tag attached certifying
kashrut. Consumers who have
used meat from Bernard and Son,
the rabbis said, should kasher
(make kosher) their utensils. The
rules vary for kashering depend-
ing on the composition of the
utensils and the rabbis advised
consumers to call their own rabbi
or the Vaad office for advice.
After removing Bernard and

Son's certification, the Vaad had
a man carry a sign in front of the
store July 20, placed an an-
nouncement in The Jewish News,
had its rabbis announce the de-
certification to their congrega-
tions on Shabbat, and sent
notices home with students at
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah and its
Beth Jacob School for girls.
Business at Bernard and Son
dropped 10-15 percent this week
according to Andrew Rayber,
Bernard's son. He claimed it was
a slight drop that may not be
connected to de-certification by
the Vaad Harabonim. "I hear
things are quiet all over," he said.
Bernard Rayber, a Polish im-
migrant, moved to Detroit from
England. He opened his first
butcher shop in the Seven Mile -
Evergreen area in 1971, then
moved the store to the Nine Mile
- Coolidge area. The store has
been located on Orchard Lake
Road near 13 Mile for three
years.

three a rabbis — 20 from Detroit a
Windsor, Ann Arbor and Toledo —ate currently nibro
Vaad Harabonim. They represenkall the Orthodox institutions
in the city. • .
Sixteen masligichim (inspectors) are employed by the Vaad,
with five supervising 11 kosher butcher shops. They report to
the Vaad's kashrut committee, made up of the organization's
executive committee — Rabbis Leizer Levin, Chaskell Grubner,
Shaiall Zachariash, Elimelech Goldberg, Elimelech Silberberg,
Leo Goldman and Shmuel Irons --- and Rabbis Reuven Drucker
and Dov Loketch.
The mashgichim are required to be Sabbath observant
(shorter shabbat) and must. be knowledgeable about meat.
Rabbi Grubner said former butchers are preferred and at the
Present time one mashgiach — Leo Steinmetz — is a former
butcher. Some of the mashgichim need little training for the
part-time job, while others, undergo extensive education.
According to Rabbis Grubner and Goldberg, the
mashgichim visit the butcher shops each day to make sure that
all meat that comes into the stores is kosher. They are also
present during the kashering process in which the meat. is
soaked to remove traces of blood, drained and salted. The
mashgichim also have keys to each shop so that they can con-
duct after-hours inspections.
The Vaad ruled in 1975 that all new butchers in the area
must be Sabbath observant. Several of the established butchers
do not meet• this requirement. A person wishing to open a shop
today under the Vaad's supervision is required to agree to the
organization's guidelines on where to purchase meat (to insure
kosher slaughtering), the Vaad's kashering guidelines, and in-
spection at any time.
The butchers pay for the supervision, but the Vaad has been
subsidizing the mashgichim's pav based on their experience,
travel time to the shops and other factors. Because of questions
about the butchers paying the mashgichim in person, the Vaad
is working toward c011ecting the fees from the butchers and
paying the masligichith through the Vaad office.
"We want no question of impropriety," the rabbis said. We
have good mashgichim and professional certification in Detroit.
Our shlita (slaughtering '
is recognized as very high
standard, and our meats are shipped all over the world."
