Dr. Markel was a member of the board of the Interlochen music camp and arts academy, a member of Adat Shalom Synagogue and an associate member of Friends of Hebrew University. A World War II Air Force vete- ran, Dr. Markel was a member of the American Red Magen David for Israel. He is survived by his wife, Doris; a sister, Mrs. Rose Barry; nieces and nephews. (313) 626-9050 Dr. Joseph Markel When the Detroit Jewish histo- rian compiles the history of youth movements here, the chapter dealing with Young Judaea will have lengthy accounts of the pioneering role of Joseph Markel. Dr. Markel, who died July 16 at age 79, was an activist in the movement and an organizer who helped in the formation of numerous chapters here. He par- ticipated in numerous contests, helped organize sports field days for the movement at Belle Isle and continued his supporting interest of the cause throughout his life. With his wife, Doris, one of the prominent musicians here, he encouraged her in her work as president of Music Study Club and shared -with her many inter- ests in the Zionist movement, primarily the Jewish National Fund, -Hadassah and the Zionist Organization of America. A regular participant in con- gregational services, he and Doris were always present at communal functions and there was hardly a lecture in any of the local synagogues that they didn't attend together. Three years ago, Dr. Markel was honored at the annual dinner of Detroit Friends of Shaare Zedek Hospital in Israel with scholarships in recognition of his services to that institution. A native of Poland, Dr. Markel came to the U.S. 70 years ago. He attended the Wayne State Uni- versity Medical School and the University of Chicago Medical School. He was a practicing physician for 53 years. During World War II, he was a military doctor at the air force base in Denver, Colo. He later became chief of physical medicine at the Veterans Ad- ministration Hospital in Allen Park, a post he held for 25 yearS. Among his professional member- ships were the Anierican Medical Association and the Michigan Medical Society, the Club of American Medicine and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
