meat was kosher, and alleged
that the mashgiach, Leo Stein-
metz, wanted special favors for
his supervision.
Steinmetz said the only favor
he asked was that his $35 weekly
fee for supervision be paid in
cash, not by check. "I'm a semi-
retired man and thaVs how I
wanted it. It was the regular fee
for supervision. Before me, Rabbi
Elimelech Silberberg was paid
$150 monthly. I never asked for
any favors, and if I bought any-
thing at the store I paid full
price."
Rayber said, "It's his word
against mine. He should have
taken the meat to Rabbi Grubner
(the Vaad administrator). My
Word is good, too!"
Rayber said he has made ar-
rangements for Rabbi Jack
Goldman of the Metropolitan
Kashruth Council to supervise
kashruth at his store "when ev-
erything is cleared up."
"When he is exonerated by the
Vaad," Rabbi Goldman told The
Jewish News, "for this terrible
thing that they have done to him,
and if he does not want to go back
to them, then I will supervise his
store."
Meanwhile, Rayber was hos-
pitalized Tuesday after suffering
a suspected heart attack.

Lubavitch To Host
Subject Of 'Holy Days'

"Sheina Koenigsberg" will be
the special guest at a parlor
meeting Wednesday at the home
of Milton and Dawn Gilman,
sponsored by the Lubavitch
Foundation of Michigan.
"Mrs.
Koenigsberg"
(a
pseudonym) is the principal - sub-
ject of the book Holy Days by Lis
Harris. The parlor meeting will
be in preparation for the
Lubavitch dinner/concert Sept.
23 at Masonic Temple.
The dinner/concert, being
given in honor of Jack and
Miriam Shenkman, will feature
Pinchas Zukerman and the 50-
piece St. Paul Chamber Or-
chestra.
Holy Days is based on a series
of essays first appearing in The
New Yorker in Sept. 1985, and is
about the real-life experiences of
"Mrs. Koenigsberg." In the es-

says, Mrs. Koenigsberg says she
"grew up like any well-to-do
American girl . . . went to movies
and parties, . . . dated, and sort of
drifted along, like everyone else."
Although her family was Or-
thodox, and they observed the
Sabbath and other Jewish tradi-
tions, she says that neither she,
nor her brothers or sister ever
really felt connected with any of
them.
When she married her husband
Moshe (a Lubavitcher) and be-
came a Lubavitcher, tradition
and life itself became more mean-
ingful to her, she says. "I've come
to understand that, like all Jews,
I'm here for a purpose."
For information regarding
either the parlor meeting or the
dinner/concert, call Lubavitch
Foundation, 626-7023 or 737-
2625.

The Council of Orthodox Rab-
bis of Greater Detroit has with-
drawn its certification of kas-
hruth from Bernard and Sons
Kosher Meat Market in Far-
mington Hills.
According to Rabbi Elimelech
Goldberg, a spokesman for the
Council (Vaad Harabonim), a
kashruth inspector found non-
kosher meat in the store July 17.
The Vaad removed its sign of cer-
tification that afternoon, and had
a placard-carrying picket outside
the store last Sunday.
Goldberg said the inspector
found meat that was not packed
by Monarch Packing Co. in De-
troit, the only local kosher
supplier, and the method of pac-
kaging indicated the meat was
from a non-kosher source. "At
first, Bernard told the mashgiach
(inspector) that the meat was
being delivered to a non-kosher
restaurant," Rabbi Goldberg
said.
According to Rabbi Leizer Le-
vin, president of the Vaad, cer-
tification was removed from the
store by a unanimous vote of the
Vaad. "We feel we have proof,"
the rabbi said. "There is no
doubt."
Store owner Bernard Raybert
told The Jewish• News that the
