`FIRST ANNIVERSARY of
istorante di Modesta at Market
Street Shoppes on Northwestern
s ,a happy one for owners Manuel
._,navez and Stephan Ajami .. .
with the addition of its license for
1ocktails (wine, beer and liquor)
\. . at their 80 seat restaurant .. .
,rnfortable, relaxing and inti-
nate.
Ristorante di Modesta is the
third place at this locale . . . and
iirst one to make a success of it
.. Owners Manuel Chavez and
;Stephan Ajami make everything
1 1-orn scratch . . . even the pasta.
The neatly-styled restaurant
las plants in the center and at
i-ont windows, candlelight low-
langing center lamp fixtures,
'ugh ceiling . . . and always dou-
)le tablecloths . . . and cloth nap-
fins . . . whether lunch or dinner.
It is now closed Sundays for the
ummer months . . . but will be-
come a seven-day-a-week opera-
;ion probably in September .. .
Ristorante di Modesta is pre-
3ently open six days . . . for lunch
and dinner.
Recent visit there was another
. ..iccessful one at dinner . . . My
'Araiter, Malek Taha, is among the
letter ones around, congenial,
'courteous and efficient . . . I had
;he house salad . . . With fresh
-omaine and basil dressing .. .
the entree of milk-fed veal car-
iofi, topped with artichokes .. . .
Sauteed in a lemon butter sauce
. . and served with slices of
\ ,:mon was superb .. .

F

AGAIN ... ABSOLUTELY
NO TRUTH to rebounding

rumor that Irving's Delicatessen
Restaurant in La Mirage on
Northwestern Hwy. is for sale .. .
Naturally, for the right price,
nything can be bought . . . but
rving's is very far from any sale
t,alk.
FOR THE FIRST TIME in
several years, local musical head-
liners Phil Marcus Esser and
Barbara Bredius will play a "no
.over charge" lounge entertain-
ment series, opening Aug. 1 at
Red Cedars, Telegraph and Nine
Mile Rd.
Performing their favorites
from many past productions, the
pair will do shows at 8:30, 10:30
and midnight every Wednesday,
Friday and Saturday through
Sept. 13.
Both Phil and Barbara are
'coming off a banner 1985 year
when he was named one of the
ten "Michiganians of the year" by
Detroit News . . . and she was
selected as "Best Vocalist" in the
,:letropolitan Detroit area by De-
Xroit Monthly magazine.
Performances will be in the
main floor dining room of Red
Cedars . . . upstairs from popular
new comedy room, The Comedy
,Crossing . . . Guests can go up-
stairs or down according to their
Lastes in music and comedy .. .
Entertainers from downstairs
will probably pop in upstairs for
th rief
appearances . . . and vice
(b

The series is also one of the few
times . . . and the first in 30
months . . . that Phil and Barbara
nave left the bright lights of De-

troit's central city to perform in
the suburbs.
They have thrilled Detroit
audiences with their innovative,
highly-professional musical per-
formances for more than 12
years.
Oct. 11, 1973, Jacques Brel is
Alive and Well and Living in
Paris opened at Mercy College
. . . launching the pair on their
career of performing about 25 ex-
traordinary theme musical prod-
uctions.
Mostly written, directed and
produced by Phil, the shows have
included . . . Personals, Leadbelly
to Brel, The Fantastics, In
Celebration/Kurt Weill and Lotte
Lenya, Cole Porter at the Book,
Hotel Brel, and Fifty Years.
NICE SOUND through end of
July at Excalibur, Franklin and
Northwestern Hwy. by Kevin
De'Costa Trio . . . It's music for
listening and dancing . . . with
Kevin on the keyboard and voc-
alizing like Tony Bennett and
Buddy Greco . . . Darren De-
Marco plays a smooth bass .. .
and Tony Baines gives a fine
rhythmic beat on his drums .. .
Pat Archer says they're made for
the room . . . and plans to have
them return.
THIRD ANNIVERSARY al-
ready . . . of Sero's on Northwest-
ern . . . with owners Jim Bowers
and Lucky Vasilakis having
five-day "Thank You" specials

"RUMPELSTILTSKINi3

not the musical group . . . but
popular play for youngsters .. .
will be performed at Jewish
Community Center, W. 'Maple,
this Tuesday, 7:30 . . . by Henry
Martin's Children's Entertain-
ment Company . . . If you don't
remember, Rumpelstiltskin is the
classical fairytale by Brother's
Grimm of the little man that can
spin worthless straw into gold
and the miller's daughter who
must guess his unusual name.

KURT DEEG, active member -
of Windsor'S Restaurant Associa-
tion . . . and Downtown Business
Association . . . owns both Ye
Olde Steak House and La Au-
berge restaurants . . . each on
Chatham West.
FIRST ANNUAL Saints &
Sinners Night in Los Angeles,
Calif. will honor former De-
troiter, Master Turk Prujan
(Herman Prujansky) . . . Oct. 21,
7:30 p.m. . . . For more info, call
Turk at 213-654-9418.
EVENING AT THE Blue Nile
in Trapper's Alley downtown by
Young Women of Jewish Na-
tional Fund Erev and their
spouses is Aug. 10 . . . Blue Nile
owner Seifu Lessanework, an
Ethiopian Jew, will tell about his
childhood and life before coming
to U.S. . . . Reservations are
limited to 40 people . . . Call
President Karen Katz, 626-8454.
MORE THAN 125 art deco
enthusiasts attended first meet-
ing of DAADS (Detroit Area Art
Deco Society) . . . Meeting held at
historic Scarab Club, began with
greeting from DAADS president
Ron Steinberg, followed by a de-
scription of the Scarab Club and
its founding history by Thomas
Brunk . . . A brief course in Art
Deco 101 by Bernard Shulman,
accompanied by slides of archi-
tecture, art, clothing and objects
entertained the attendees.
KITCHEN HINTS ... Fluf-
fier omelets are no secret . . . just
add a dash of cold water, a couple
dashes of skim milk and smid-
geon of corn starch .•. . Your
omelets will be light, airy and
fluffy.
If you want your jello molds to
chill faster, try this . . . set the
mold in a pan of ice cubes before
refrigerating . . . It'll cut your re-
frigeration time in half.
Here's a great suggestion for
left-over vegetables . . . At to-
day's prices, it almost seems a sin
to throw away left-over veggies
. . . We all know, however, that
re-heated fresh vegetables can
turn to mush or lose their flavor
the following day . . . Instead, try
adding them as a top layer to
macaroni and cheese casserole
. . . They'll add interest and
flavor, and cut the costs of your
next meal.
