visiting Israel someday, they did
not mention it. Mann is return-
ing to the United States to enter
medical school, but Hebrew
classes will be continued at Beij-
ing University. Why?
The People's Republic of
China has no diplomatic rela-
tions with the State of Israel.
When telecommunications links
between the two countries were
established recently, the
Chinese Foreign Ministry speci-
fically announced that this did
not presage any change in Chi-
na's non-recognition of Israel.
At least 15 million Moslems
are believed to live in China,
twice as many as when the
Communists came to power 40
years ago, but statistics are not
firm. Some estimates run as
high as 50 million Chinese Mos-
lems, which would equal the
population of France.
Whatever their share of the
nation's gigantic population,
Chinese Moslems predominantly
live in sensitive border areas,
and fundamentalism is on the
rise among them as it is
throughout the Islamic world.
The government issued the first
Chinese-language Koran in
1982, perhaps in response to
these facts.

Israel Seeks
Market For
Exported Fish

Eilat (JTA) — Israel is cur-
rently seeking markets in
Europe for the gilt head sea
bream, a fish it used to breed in
the Bardawil Lake in northern
Sinai and is now breeding for
commercial use, in the waters of
the Red Sea near Eliat.
About 20 tons already have
been exported, mainly to Rome.
Ministry or Agriculture experts
have been doing market studies
in Europe, funded by the Jewish
Agency, and initial findings are
favorable, especially in Italy and
Greece.
The fish are bred by National
Center for Maritime Agriculture
which has dispatched 13 scien-
tists to the Red Sea to explore
the commercial potential of the
sea waters. The bream is the first
practical result of their efforts
which have been financed in part
by the Jewish Agency' settle-
ment department.
Kibbutz Elifaz in the Arava
region began in 1984 to breed
the sea bream in floating cages
in the Red Sea. A pollution pro-
blem arose because every 1,000
) tons of fish raised requires 2,500
tons of fish food, 60 percent of
which is returned as waste. The
Maritime Agricultural Center
subsequently built inland sea
water ponds to solve the pro-
blem. The Center is also breed-
ing shrimp for export.
