Before any person receives this
assistance they must disclose
what they get from the govern-
ment as a pension. In addition,
one who has no family must be-
queth his property to the com-
munity. In this way the Jewish
federation is able to continue to
support the remnants of that
community. We visited the Rosen
Home for the Aged and the new
Martin Balush Home, which was
under construction and will cost
$3,800 per bed by the time it is
finished.
We visited Jassy which, prior
to the Second World War, was a
tremendously large Jewish com-
munity. Only 1,500 Jews are liv-
ing there today, but almost the
same activities we saw in
Bucharest were being carried on
by the JDC in Jassy, as they are
for the approximately 13,000
Jews living outside of Bucharest.
The experience in Romania
that I will never forget, and that
gives me chills even to this day,
was an evening spent at the
Jewish Community Center in
Bucharest. The place was packed
wall to wall for a performance of
the federation's chamber music
group, a children's choir and a
choir of kids of university age.
The people on the United Jewish
Appeal Mission were all seated in
front as honored guests. We were
presented with two hours of reli-
gious music and songs sung
entirely in .Yiddish and Hebrew.
It was a tremendously moving
experience. I wish I could ver-
balize the emotions we felt and
discussed as we rode back to the
hotel. You could see clearly the
results of a strong religious
environment still existing within
that small community. Weighing
on all of our minds was whether
we would be able to get the bal-
ance of the young people out of
Romania prior to the death of
Rabbi Rosen or a possible change
in the governme.nt of that coun-
try.
You might ask why all of the
young people are not leaving
immediately. One of the reasons
is the availability of free univer-
sity education causing many of
the children to desperately try to
complete their education prior to
the time they make aliyah.
The Jewish community is
probably living better than the
non-Jewish community as a re-
sult of the efforts of the JDC and
the programs that are being run
there.
