The researchers have de- veloped new graphite and fluorine materials which show promise for a number of technological applications, such as improved rechargeable bat- teries and more efficient electri- cal conductors. The electrical properties of these materials result from fluorine being sandwiched be- tween layers of graphite. Up until recently, no other com- pounds of fluorine and graphite were known to possess th metal- lic characteristics (and hence the degree of electrical conduc- tivity) of this type.
