Story Brings
Reminiscence

I noticed the story (Little
Things Mean A Lot by Roberta
Graff, Jewish News, July 4, was
labeled fiction but anyone from
the Bronx will know it to be the
absolute truth. I haven't lived in
the Bronx since 1956 but the
first 25 years of my life (those
that I remember) were spent in
Apt. 5G in an apartment build-
ing on Decatur Avenue between
Gun Hill Road and E. 210th
Street.
The building Ms. Graff de-
scribes on the Concourse is
duplicated throughout the
borough. She describes my
apartment house, the people
who lived there and their exist-
ence to a "T".
When I was 8 years old, there
lived in the apartment house .a
family whose daughter was
quite attractive. She was in her
-early 20s. I do not know how the
adult population regarded her
but us kids thought she was
something special.
One Saturday afternoon her
date came to pick her up in a
Lincoln Continental. You just
did not see Lincoln Continentals
in that part of the Bronx. I
doubt if they were seen in any
part of the Bronx.
When they came out, the car
was swarming . with the curious.
He was an extremely nice fellow
and quite proud of his car and
showed us how the button doors
and windows worked. (Quite a
miracle in 1939.) She of course
was embarrassed by the atten-
tion. Whenever I would meet my
friends from Decatur Ave. we
always reminisced about the day
the Lincoln Continental came to
Decatur Ave.
My thanks to Ms. Graff for a
delightful article.

Who Gives More:
Israel, Diaspora?

There seemed to be an under-
lying message in the recent
series of articles on how UJA
funds are spent or misspent that
since the Diaspora bankrolls the
government of Israel that the
Diaspora should also have a
greater say regarding such pol-
icy questions as investment in
the West Bank etc.
Let us have no illusions.
While no one would want to
minimize the importance of
Diaspora funding, we should al-
ways remember that the Dias-
pora contributes only a few per-
centage points of what the
people of Israel "contribute"
each year through various taxes.
The people of Israel also "con-
tribute" themselves and their
children for army service in the
defense of the Jewish state.
In contrast, Diaspora contri-
butions have been fairly stable
in constant dollars over the
years. The per capita UJA con-
tribution to Israel is an embar-
rassment. Even the much touted
Project Renewal program was
and is heavily subsidized by the
Israeli taxpayer.
As for the physical support of

Israel, one can only note that
more American Jewish groups
cancelled their Israel travel
plans this summer than Gen-
tiles from Europe.
Our contribution to our Israeli
brothers is so dwarfed by the
burden they themselves bear
that we must recognize their
inherent right to determine
their own policies and priorities.

New York (JTA) — A $200
million capital improvements
and additions campaign for the
agencies of the Federation of
Jewish Philanthropies of New
York was recommended by fed-
eration president Daniel Shap-
iro.
Shapiro, winding up his
three-year term, spoke at the
69th and final annual meeting
of the federation. The federation
has merged with the United
Jewish Appeal of Greater New
York and the UJA-Federation
Campaign to form the UJA-
Federation of New York.
Shapiro said a capital im-
provements campaign, based on
a two-year survey of capital
needs of agencies other than
hospitals in the 130-member
federation network, was "abso-
lutely imperative."

Seek Survivors
From Ukraine

The Justice Department's
Office of Special Investigations
(OSI) is responsible for inves-
tigating and civilly prosecuting
Nazi war criminals presently re-
siding illegally in the United
States. OSI requests assistance
in locating survivors from the
following areas:
The town of Stryj in the Uk-
raine. Survivors may be able to
provide information regarding
the treatment of local citizens,
including Jews, by the Nazi-
sponsored Ukrainian police.
The town of Ulena, Lithuania.
Survivors may be able to pro-
vide information regarding the
treatment of Jews and other
civilians by a Lithuanian
paramilitary unit in Ulena and
in the Rase Forest.
OSI appreciates any assis-
tance in locating survivors from
these areas. Replies may be ad-
dressed to me at the address be-
low. Persons may write in any
language they choose.
