Snowmass, Cola (JTA) — The
Central Conference of American
Rabbis last week called on the
Reagan Administration to "nor-
malize relations" with the San-
dinista government in Nicara-
gua and urged a halt to U.S. fun-
ding for the military activities of
the Contra rebel forces fighting
the government in Managua.

At the same time, the nearly
400 delegates attending the
CCAR'S 97th annual convention
here voted to support a resolu-
tion condemning the Nicara-
guan government for its treat-
ment of Jews, its ties with ter-
rorist groups, its denial of
freedoms, its persecutions of
Meskito Indians and what the
CCAR called "the betrayal of its
own revolution."

The resolutions were part of a
series of such actions on a varie-
ty of issues taken at the conclu-
sion of the CCAR convention.
Other resolutions adopted by
the delegates included a call for
discouraging CCAR members
from gambling — a recent report
indicated that 25 percent of
America's compulsive gamblers
are Jews — while another resolu-

Calling them the "Ill-Will
Games," ADL's National Direc-
tor Nathan Perlmutter said that
while Turner's stated goal for
the games is to take politics out
of sports, "he has cynically con-
done the very opposite in accept-
ing the politically motivated
exclusion of Israel, America's
democratic ally."

tion called on the government to
protect people who have tested
positively, or who have devel-
oped symptoms of AIDS under
the same laws that protect the
rights of the handicapped.
Another resolution condemned
the political system- of racial
separation in South Africa and
directed the CCAR's Executive
Board to divest all investments
in corporations doing business
in South Africa.
In addition, three separate
resolutions were passed on Cath-
olic-Jewish relations, which
acknowledged increased dia-
logue and shared social actions
between Jews and Roman Cath-
olics and called for the establish-
ment of a variety of ways to fur-
ther understanding between the
two religions.
At the same time, the second
resolution passed by the CCAR
calls for the Vatican to grant im-
mediate diplomatic recognition
the State of Israel. Finally, the
last of three resolutions on
Roman Catholic-Jewish rela-
tions objected to the establish-
ment of a Carmelite monastery
at the site of the Auschwitz con-
centration camp in Poland.

The World Basketball Cham-
pionship, now being played in
Barcelona, Spain, includes a
team from Israel. The basketball
games have been incorporated
into the Goodwill Games broad-
cast, TBS vice president, Jim
Trahey, said. Although the bas-
ketball competition in Spain is
the "official" basketball event of
the Goodwill Games, South
Korea and Israel were not in-
vited to the opening ceremonies
in Moscow. South Korea is also
playing in the basketball games.
The 16 days of sports events
in Moscow is the first major
multi-sport competition between
the top American and Soviet
bloc athletes since the 1976
Montreal Olympics. Both the
Soviet Union and United States
have each boycotted one Olym-
pic Game since then for political
reasons.

Turner Admits Israel
Not invited To Games

New York (JTA) — Ted
Turner, the free-wheeling
entrepreneur whose broadcast-
ing corporation is co-sponsoring
with the Soviet government the
so-called Goodwill Games now
being held in Moscow, confirmed
that Israel was not invited to
compete in the international
sports competition.
"That's right," Turner re-
sponded when queried about re-
ports that Israel had not been
invited to participate in the
games. Turner, head of the
Atlanta-based Turner Broad-
casting System, was interviewed
by telephone from Moscow on
the ABC News television pro-
gram Nightline.
Israel, along with South Af-
rica and South- Korea, was not
invited to participate in the
games at the request of the
Soviet government, Turner said.
This apparently contradicted a
statement from an official at the
Soviet Mission to the UN who
said that "All countries are in-
vited to participate — there are
no restrictions."
Turner also repeated on the
Nightline broadcast an allega-
tion that Israel was not par-
ticipating in the sports event
being staged in Moscow because
Israel did not qualify for invita-
tions. Only the top ten athletes
in any given sport received invi-
tations from the Goodwill
Games. Israel only falls in the
top ten in men's basketball, ac-
cording to Turner.
