Plotnick Assures
Safety At Center

Investigators now doubt that anti-Semitism was
behind the bomb attempt

It is safe" to come to the Jewish
Community Center, declared Morton
Plotnick, the Center's executive di-
rector, after a pipe bomb was dis-
covered under the outdoor swimming
pool's lifeguard stand Saturday
night.
Asked whether the bomb's dis-
covery and subsequent detonation by
a state police bomb squad caused
Center members to have second
thoughts about coming to the
facility, Plotnick answered, "People
have been and are still comfortable
in coming to the JCC. There has
been no serious outcry."
He went on to say that security
measures were being stepped up, but
declined to give details.

Israel Nixes
Inquiry Into
Shin Bet

Jerusalem (JTA) — The Cabinet
Voted 14 to 11 last Monday to reject
the creation of a judicial commission
of inquiry to investigate the Shin
Bet affair. As a result, Attorney
General Yosef Harish will proceed
with a police investigation and the
Cabinet officially took note of his in-
tention.
The two main components of the
unity government, Labor and Likud,
were deadlocked 10 to 10 on the is-
sue. Communications Minister
Amnon Rubinstein of the Shinui
Party voted with Labor in favor of a
commission. The three religious
ministers, Yosef Burg, Yitzhak
Peretz and Avraham Shapira, sided
with Likud against a judicial in-
quiry.
Although Harish had spelled out
reasons why a judicial commission
Was, from the government's point of
view, preferable to a police probe,

press, results of the investigation
into the materials used in the pipe
bomb were still not available.
Police sources described the de-
vice as a "typical pipe bomb," two
inches in diameter and eight inches
long with a simple fuse, but lacking
a timer or a remote control deto-
nator.
It was the discovery of a similar
device which exploded July 1, a mile
from the Center site in West Bloom-
field, that caused investigators to
generally discount an anti-Semitic
motive to the bomb incident. Police
said they believe that the two bombs
were placed by someone who just
wanted to watch them go off, rather
than cause major damage or injuries.
