Israelis Swat
Mosquitoes

BEERSHEVA — A bacterium
found nine years ago by an Is-
raeli ecologist in a pool of stand-
ing water in the Negev Desert
may bring the age-old, world-
wide mosquito menace under
control.
The bacterium, Bacillus
thuringiensis israelensis (B.t.i.),
which produces toxins when it
forms spores, is deadly against
mosquito and black fly larvae,
but harmless to humans. B.t.i. is
considered so safe that in 1978
the World Health Organization
nominated it the world's safest
biological control agent.
If Dr. Joel Margalit, who
leads the research into how to
effectively utilize the bacterium,
succeeds in his task, toxic and
sometimes ineffective insec-
ticides used since World War II
can happily be abandoned.
The bacteria can now be
commercially distributed in
powder form and later sprayed
on mosquito-infested water. Its
main drawback is that it is ef-
fective for only one or two days
at which time its toxin disap-
pears; mosquito eggs can still
hatch into larvae and later into
mosquitos. Throughout the
world, scientists are exploring
ways of overcoming these prob-
lems.
Making use of the new knowl-
edge being uncovered in labs
everywhere, Israeli scientists
hope to turn mosquito pupae
(the intermediate development
state of a mosquito between the
larval and adult stages) into de-
layed time bombs, whereby after
being killed by B.t.i. powder,
they will in turn prove lethal to
eggs, larvae and mature mos-
quitos.

"I don't sense it as someone
aiming at the Jews," commented
Alvin Kushner, executive direc-
tor of the. Jewish Community
Council.
The bomb was placed in an
isolated area," said West Bloom-
field Township Police Sgt. Mike
Madigan. "The lifeguard stand
was very visible from a distance.
So whoever did it could light the
fuse and watch it go off."
The bomb did not detonate,
however. Madigan said he be-
lieves that it may have been in
place longer than the police first
thought. It was originally be-
lieved that the device had been
placed Friday night or Saturday
morning, he said.
But the bomb was wet," he
continued. "This leads us to be-
lieve that it could have been
there longer." Perhaps it was
placed there during the rainy
previous weekend. "The fuse
went out after it was lit and he
didn't come back to relight it,"
Madigan speculated.
Plotnick would not reveal the
identity of the Center employee
who found the pipe bomb, but
said, "We all appreciate his
being aware of what to do and
handling the situation."
