Recently, Kagen has begun to
devote much of his time to
sculpting menorahs from the
soft limestone. His first, com-
plete with oil lamps, came from
the wreckage of a Detroit bank
building.
"I like the idea of my art
being in a garden or in a home,"
he said. "I like the idea of it
being useful. I make a menorah
because it's useful. It's pretty,
yes. But you can light the
darned thing up and use it."
Kagen has also experimented
recently with dyeing some of the
limestone pieces, a process he
says he's not seen any other ar-
tist do. The dye is a composite of
a number of chemicals and a
mortar dye which holds up well
and gives the limestone an
added texture. TWo of the pieces
— one, a charcoal gray, and the
other, a subtle, rose-beige — are
on display at the current ex-
hibit.
As to his style, Kagen de-
scribes it only as "very simple."
Though some of his pieces are
remindful of Diego Rivera fig-
ures, and he says many people
say they perceive a kind of Mex-
ican influence in his work,
Kagen said he doesn't really see

it that way. "It's not primitiye,"
he contended.
He does admit, though, to
being a long-time, ardent fan of
Spanish artist Joan Miro. One of
Kagen's menorahs — originally
a roof stone at Maverick's Res-
taurant on Woodward Avenue
— was inspired, he said, by sev-
eral Miro forms.
"My pieces are just meant to
be enjoyable. though," he said.
"They're pleasant to make and
pleasant to live with, I think.
And I'm not meaning to state
anything real heavy with them."
He said he can see himself
carving limestone far into the
future, a dust-covered old man
with a cup of coffee by his side,
bending over a bench, chipping
away at a block of stone late
into the night.
And, he said, even then, much
of the reward will come in that
search for just the right stone.
"I can look at stone now, and
right away, some of it I reject,"
he said. "Others, I can just see
something there. Each stone is
different. It's almost mystical:
`Look at the stone, and the stone
will tell you'.
"I guess that sounds a little
like a kid's Kung Fu movie or
something. But it's really
true."
