YOU MIGHT CALL it The
New Somerset Inn" on W. Big
Beaver in Troy ... with the
proper hotel entrance and lobby
that it never had ... an elegant
dining room like West End,
which now competes among the
best ... and so many many
other wonderful features that
are bringing more and more
people ... plus producing even
better reasons for celebrities to
stay there while in town.
Now there is Crumpets ... a
casual dining room many cuts
above a coffee shop ... with in-
timate delight that turns people
on . . . So airy, so bright, so
much well appointed class.

Food & Spirits
Had lunch at Crumpets re-
cently ... with Judy Frankel,
hotel's fine banquet planner and
party coordinator ... hubby
Stan, Somerset bossman who
says, "She's great, and I get to
see her more often, too" ... and
Scott Frickman, Somerset Inn's
knowledgeable director of opera-
tions ... with a fine background
Specializing in one half pound Ground Round s, which are
highly regarded by several Detroit publications. Also, fresh
seafood daily, entree size Salads, and a special menu from
American Heart Association (which we were first in
Michigan to present).

of food and beverage for hotels
and restaurants.
August will be two years that
Scott has been at Somerset Inn
... He helped open both the
Tropicana and Sands hotels in
Atlantic City ... and came here
from Stouffer's of Houston.
The food at Crumpets is de-
lightful fare ... with choice pre-
sentation ... like the cold well-
bodied excellent gaspacho soup,
served in a stemmed glass.
Lunch at Crumpets includes
10 very interesting luncheon
salads ... eight hot or cold
sandwiches ... plus six burgers
... seven appetizers ... two
homemade soups ... five side
orders like lox, bagel and cream
cheese, chili, pita pizza with
garden salads, quiche and soup,
potato skins with choice of chili,
vegetable, sour cream or chicken
... eight entrees from club
steak to broiled whitefish to
veal parmigiana to broiled scrod
to shrimp to fettucine with
pasta to farmer's omelette, etc.
The Crumpets dessert menu is
such that could make a dieter go
stark raving mad ... so many
good things to eat ... plus fro-
zen drinks with or without ice
cream.
And the biscuits made at
Crumpets are so good ... there
is seldom any left in basket
after being brought to the table.
Entertainers appearing at
places like Pine Knob, Meadow
Brook, Silverdome and others
can almost always be seen at
Crumpets having breakfast in
the morning.
Franz Eggar is executive chef
for both Crumpets ... and West
End.
It is interesting that every-
thing at Crumpets custom made
• . both inside and outside ...
coordinated with taste.
There is seating for 124 at
purple padded seats and booths
• . 28 more are accommodated
in the adjoining bar and grille.
The somewhat checkered
decor is like a Crumpets
trademark ... Accompanied by
large marble-style columns,
open grille work between booths
and around the dining areas,
heavy glass over gray tablec-
loths to match the gray walls on
one side and blonde oak on an-
other ... skylight ... and bir-
chwood atop the padded chairs.
At evening time, the lights
are turned down for romantic
dining setting.
It is open Sunday through
Thursday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m ...
and Friday and Saturday 6 a.m.
to 1 a.m.
Crumpets is probably one of
the prettiest rooms of its type
anywhere ... and has been
gaining much note because of
the decor, food freshness and
preparation ... and service.
This is no ordinary hotel res-
taurant . .. Private doors lead
onto the outside.
Servers enjoy working at
Crumpets ... with a main rea-
son being the room to bring
their trays ... Whereas so many
other restaurants try to cram as
many tables together as possi-
ble, Stan Frankel has done to
Crumpets what he did with
West End ... put the tables
apart for easy access and pri-
vacy.
Like its big sister, the elegant
West End fine dining room,
Crumpets has also taken on a
reputation ... That of informal
epicurean delight . at reason-
able prices . . . for breakfast,
lunch or dinner.
There's a lot of pride in the
management of Somerset Inn
. Crumpets Restaurant is a
big part of it.
THE LOVING CUP, featur-
ing Marlene Hill, is at Duffy's
on Cooley Lake Rd. through
Aug. 2 ... Wednesday to Satur-
day ... It then opens Aug. 5 at
Panache on Woodward, Tuesday
through Saturday ... Alexander
Zonjic Trio will be at Panache
all Mondays through August.
THERE'S ANOTHER Man-
ny's Deli now ... and it is
owned by the same Manny
Farao who was so popular with
Ferndale folks (among many
others) on 9 Mile near Wood-
ward ... Manny still cuts Vie-
nna beef ... and is located on
Gratiot in Clinton Township.
TICKETS FOR rhythm and
blues superstar band Frankie
Beverly and Maze ... at Pre-
mier Center on Van Dyke .
July 26 and 27 ... are going for
$19.75 ... with showtimes at
7:30 and 10:30 p.m.
Mirage, impressions of world-
famous females by an all-male
cast, has been extended through
July ... Added dates are 12, 16,
17, 18 and 25.
"Puttin' on the Stars", a Las
Vegas revue of favorites singing,
dancing, joking, is July 23, 24,
30 and 31 ... Showtimes 7 and
10 ... with tickets $9.75.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE at
Jacques now ... The Bingham
Farms fine dining spot owned by
Dr. Alan Dorfman and Dick
Masudo on Telegraph, has sud-
denly become an exciting "new
adventure" in culinary expertise
. .. with recent acquisition of
Executive Chef Remy Berdy.
The same holds true for Jo-
van, connecting next door .
also owned by Alan and Dick
... Remy is preparing and
supervising all cooking for Jo-
van, too.
There are very few chefs who
can compete with Remy ... he's
that good ... and his knowledge
of people ... their likes and dis-
likes ... are a very distinctive
added plus ...
Also, those who enjoy a good
fresh tableside Caesar Salad,
won't find many better than
that made. by Jacques maitre d'
Del Ahlonge.
When Jacques and Jovan orig-
inally opened years back as The
Atrium and Bobbies, with John
Etchart head chef; it was con-
sidered among the finest . . .
Chef Remy Berdy has him beat
by a long shot.
