David Levin, commodore of
the Great Lakes Yacht Club in
1975 and still an active
member, has competed in
numerous Port Huron-Mackinac
races. He used to skipper a 36-
foot boat.
"There were four men (in the
crew) and we each took a
daughter," he related. "The girls
were about 17 to 19. It's very in-
teresting when you wake up at
4 o'clock in the morning if
you're standing watches of four
hours on and four hours off.
You're out there in the middle
of Lake Huron and it's pitch
black and sometimes there's no
wind. You get into very interest-
ing conversations with your
daughter — things you never
talk about when you're at
home."
The cultivation of relation-
ships contributes to the fascina-
tion of the race. And there is a
camaraderie, aided by the often
leisurely pace, the calm, and the
necessity of cooperation, that
becomes evident to competitors.
"I was trapped on a boat that
ran out of cigarettes one year,"
William Edelson said with a
laugh. "Would you believe? You
can get killed (for not having
cigarettes). We traded beer for
cigarettes. Somebody was float-

ing near us. We threw over cans
of beer and they threw over
packs of cigarettes." .
Edelson is another GLYC
member and former (1977)
commodore. Mondry was a
member from 1957 through
1977. In 1975 he joined the
Bayview Yacht Club, which
sponsors the Port Huron-
Mackinac race. Schostak belongs
to both clubs.
"Out of about 200 boats there
may be ten Jewish boaters" in
the race, said Edelson, a dentist
from West Bloomfield. "Most of
them are from here (GLYC). It
doesn't mean you have Jewish
crews, necessarily. You have
mixed crews. You don't ask that.
If a guy likes to sail, he's good
company. One of the most im-
portant things to have on a boat
is good company.
"One of the biggest parts of
the Mackinac race," he said, "is
putting a crew together that is
familiar with the boat, and rac-
ing on regular . Saturday races to
get the crew in condition and
learn about the boat. Getting
the boat ready for Mackinac is a
big job because of all the equip-
ment that's required to be car-
ried: safety equipment and
navigational equipment, sails,
