neo-Nazi leader Karl-Heinz
Hoffmann was sentenced last
week in Nuremberg to nine and
a half years imprisonment for
various offenses concerning his
political activities.
But Hoffmann was cleared of
the prosecutor's main charge
that he allegedly masterminded
the 1980 murder of the Jewish
publisher Shlomo Levin and
his female companion, Frida
Poeschke.
Hoffmann's girlfriend, Fran-
ziska Birkmann, drew a seven
year prison sentence for her par-
ticipation in the neo-Nazi
leader's unlawful activities.
The most serious charge for
which Hoffmann was found
guilt was causing bodily harm to
members of his neo-Nazi para-
military group. This took place
while members of the group were
undergoing military training in
a Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization camp in Lebanon.
According to police, a member
of the group, Ude Berndt, ac-
tually killed Shlomo Levin and
his girlfriend at their Erlangen
home near Nuremberg in De-
cember 1980. Berndt had died in
Lebanon after being involved in
continuing arguments among
members of the Hoffmann
group.
The court judges decided it
was impossible to determine
Hoffmann's role in the murder
due to the disappearance of
Berndt and the lack of solid
evidence from other sources.
New York — In reaction to
continuing concern over the re-
liability of kashruth certifica-
tion, the president of the Na-
tional Council of Young Israel,
Harold M. JaCobs, has called for
"moratorium on new kosher cer-
tifications by all of the major
supervising agencies, pending a
comprehensive review of all
existing supervisions to assure
that all raw ingredients, per-
sonnel and visitation schedules
are fully adequate to guarantee
the kashruth of the final prod-
uct."
Noting the proliferation of re-
calls and notices of kashruth
certification errors and the
major kashruth problems result-
ing from the recent discovery
that an unacceptable, wine-
derived vinegar had inadver-
tently been used as a raw ingre-
dient in scores of kosher super-
vised products, the Young Israel
president declared that, "the
kosher consuming public has
lost much of its confidence in
the existing kosher supervision
system. Rather than straining
that system with additional
supervisions, the time has come
to make sure that it is able to
provide adequate supervision for
those products which are cur-
rently certified."
