Hyman Rickover Dies At 86 Washington — Adm. Hyman Rickover, called the father of the "nuclear navy," died July 8. He was 86. With a reputation for being crusty and outspoken, contemp- tuous of bureaucrady and red tape, twice passed over for pro- Marcia Ross Marcia S. Ross, a school- teacher at Wilson Elementary School in Ferndale for the past 15 years, died July 5 at age 52. Born in Detroit, Mrs. Ross was a 1969 graduate of Wayne State University. She earned her master's degree in education at WSU in 1979. She was a former school representative for the teacher's union. She also was affiliated with Recovery. She leaves her husband, Donald; three sons, Dr. Jonathan, Jordan and Andrew; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Man- uel (Marion) Eisenberg; and a brother, David Eisenberg. motion to admiral, Adm. Ric- kover served as an officer for 63 years, longer than any naval officer in American history. He was the first Jewish admiral in the U.S. Navy. Although he did not originate the idea of a nuclear powered submarine, Adm. Rickover pushed the project through, ap- pealing directly to Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, chief of naval opera- tions, for support. Adm. Rickover was born in Adm. Hyman Rickover Bernard Sloan Bernard R. Sloan, a potato buyer for the Sunshine Biscuit Co., died July 2 at age 74. Born in Detroit, Mr. Sloan was a member of B'nai B'rith, Adat Shalom Synagogue and the New York University Alumni Association. He leaves two sons, David and Joel; a daughter, Mrs. O.D. (Do- lores) Silverstein; and five grandchildren. President Carter awarded him the Medal of Freedom in 1980. Adm. Rickover retired from the Navy in 1982. Holocaust Files To Be Updated Jerusalem — Yad Vashem, Is- rael's martyrs and heroes re- membrance authority is about to launch a worldwide campaign to update its files with names of Jewish victims of the Holocaust who have not been accounted for to this date. Out of the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis, only two million are registered with Yad Vashem. Persons wishing to submit a testimony on behalf of their rela- tive should, in block letters, in- clude that person's first, last and maiden name, date and place of birth, name of mother and father and wife or husband along with profession, place of residence be- fore and during the war and their circumstance of death (place, date, etc...)
