HEIDI PRESS Local News Editor W nth the responsibilities of husband, home and children as well as her Jewish communal affiliations, Betsy Snider Heuer has a real positive attitude toward her new assignment — that of president of the Young Adult Division of the Jewish Welfare Federation. So much so that she hopes it will spill out onto the member- ship and beyond to attract new members into the division. "I want to involve them (un- affiliated) in a totally positive manner," she said, adding that she'd like to draw in new mem- bers slowly, via lectures, social events or as liaisons to the Federation-funded agencies. Although the division's major function is to participate in the Federation's Allied Jewish Campaign, to raise funds for Is- rael's humanitarian services and Jewish agencies here and abroad, Heuer would like to take a more social tack in ex- panding the membership. "I think we're going to try to have more social events, to encourage participation without fund raising." According to Marsha Kelter, director of the Young Adult Division, aiming at young adults through social means is not a bad idea. "Federation feels a responsi- bility to its constituency. It is responding to the young adult need to meet (other young Almet • Arrow • Baldwin • Bathroom Jewelry • Dornbracht adults)." You're involved with awareness of other Jews. That to me is appealing." Birmingham attorney Cathy Radner said participating in YAD "seems like the best way to go." She found that working on Israel's behalf drew her to be part of the division's activities. "As a Jewish professional it's important to be committed for the State of Israel and to work toward preserving the statehood of Israel." Louise Lessing, who is em- ployed in personnel research and human resource develop- ment, came to Detroit six years "I would like to have our division viewed in a more positive way." ago from Milwaukee. She said the division provided her with an opportunity to meet others. But Heuer doesn't want the division to be just a social club. She wants the division to pro- vide an education function, to teach the members about the needs in the Jewish community and about the role of all the Federation agencies. She said that is done through the various YAD committees, among them Outreach Involvement Seminar, Leadership Development, Liaison, Social, Lecture Series/ Political Awareness, Long- Range Planning and Missions. She said she wants to take the "money" image away from the division, to portray a more "favorable" image of YAD. "I would like to have our division viewed in a more positive way," she said. To do that, she added, would mean getting as many people as possible involved. Immediate Past President David Liner, who turned the gavel over to Heuer at last month's gala, said he hoped that the division gets "more and more people involved" and that it pursue leadership develop- ment.
