The Death Of
Lev Bronshtein
Iv
/
I thought your readers would
want to know of the recent pass-
ing of a dear refusenik, Leningrad
activist Lev Bronshtein. Lev was
a friend to many Detroiters who
visited with him in Leningrad .. .
Lev, dead at 51, died of a heart
attack in his home. He had, ap-
parently, a congenital heart con-
dition and had been confined to
his bed for several weeks in 1984.
Lev and Aleksei, his son, dreamed
of life in Israel. Lev often in-
structed other refuseniks on their
legal rights regarding emigration
and gave popular seminars.
He was an engineer, prominent
in his field. He is survived by his
wife, Elena Petrovna and another
child, his daugher, Irina. His sis-
ter, Vera Krinkin, is living in
Haifa.
His loss was profoundly felt in
Detroit by many members of the
Detroit Soviet Jewry Committee
who have long been working for
his release and the release of his
family.

Detroit Meeting
A meeting between representa-
tives of the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan Detroit
and a delegation from the city of
Minks, U.S.S.R., was cancelled
this week when the Soviets de-
cided there would not be enough
time to discuss human rights and
Soviet Jews.
The Soviet delegation was visit-
ing Detroit under the Sister Cities
program. Five Detroit city coun-
cilmen visited Minsk last year.
The Jewish Community Coun-
cil requested the meeting last
week, and a one-hour session was
scheduled for Wednesday. A
Council spokesman said the
Soviets changed their minds over
the weekend, saying "time would
be too limited to have a productive
discussion."
The Soviet delegation included
Minsk's mayor and deputy mayor,
a professor, representatives of
Minsk's auto factories, a singer,
musician and a member of the
Supreme Soviet.
They had been scheduled to
meet with JCCouncil president
Leon Cohan, and Jerry Rogers
and Jeannie Weiner of the Coun-
cil's Detroit Soviet Jewry Corn-
mittee.

Israel Aids
Texas Fund
Austin — "All segments of
Texas agriculture will benefit
from a research and development
fund that the Texas-Israel Ex-
change (TIE) has helped obtain
for farmers, ranchers and food
processors," Agriculture Com-
missioner Jim Hightower said.
Because of TIE, the Jewish Na-
tional Fund will earmark
$250,000 in research and de-
velopment money so that Israel's
agricultural technology can be
adopted to fit the particulars of
Texas farming, ranching and food
production.
