Canvas Friendships

Continued from Page 41

We try to get members active so
that the same people don't hold
the same position year after
year," Topy said.
Hosts and co-hosts share
numerous responsibilities as well.
Besides planning the activities for
the weekend, such as the pot-luck
dinners and Sunday brunches,
they must make sure the hospital-
ity table is always set up and the
coffee pot is full at all times. Ar-
riving at the campground early is
important so hosts can greet the
other members. This position is
also appointed on a volunteer
basis and if no one is available for
certain months, it is the responsi-

bility of the board to pitch in and
help. All positions are served by
the husbands and wives.
Keeping in touch during winter
months is important to the mem-
bers, and social functions are
planned. These have included
cocktail parties for adults and
Monte Carlo nights at a member's
house. Monopoly money is used
for "gambling" and all members
provide food for the party.
Weekends away are also planned,
including a non-camping stay at
the Novi Hilton.
Being a member of any kind of
group has both positive and nega-
tive aspects, but most Shalom and

Chai members agree that the good
outweighs the bad. "Spending
real, genuine time together as a
family is one of the positive as-
pects," Marlene said. Added Topy,
"We have people from different
walks of life in our club. Yet, when
everyone is together, no one tries
upstaging anyone else."
Are there any negative aspects
of joining a Jewish camping
group? "When it comes time for a
special event such as a wedding or
bar mitzvah," said Marlene, "it is
hard on the person planning it be-
cause there are always 40 more
people to invite from the camping
group."
