The Holocaust Memorial Cen-
ter will observe its second an-
niversary at a dinner on Nov. 9 at
the Westin Hotel. The event will
feature the dedication of the Be-
nard L. Maas Garden of the
Righteous presently under con-
struction adjacent to the entrance
of the HMC, 6602 W. Maple, West
Bloomfield.
Born in New York in 1896, the
late Mr. Maas moved to the De-
troit area in 1918 where, for more
than 60 years, he was a manufac-
turer's representative for the au-
tomotive business. Some of his
philanthropic activities include
the establishment of the Maas
Michigan Dormitory at the
Technion in Israel as well as con-
tributions to Fresh Air Society,
Temple Beth El and the John F.
Kennedy Peace Forest in Israel,
where he was responsible for the
erection of one of the pylons.
The Maas Garden will pay trib-
ute to the deeds of the righteous,
those who risked their own lives
and the lives of their loved ones to
save the lives of Jews.
In addition to an extensive
museum, multi-media theater,
hall of Jewish culture, memorial
flame and the Garden of the
Righteous, the Holocaust Memo-
rial Center houses a library, arc-
hive, conference facility and
video-tape study area. While serv-
ing the general public in an edu-
cational role, the HMC also
engages in original research
focusing on all aspects of the
Holocaust, including a special in-
stitute on genocidal studies.
A research project concerning
the dynamics of Jewish com-
munal, social, and educational
life in pre-Holocaust Europe is
now a part of the Holocaust
Memorial Center's program.
For information on the
Holocaust Memorial Center and
its Benard L. Maas Garden of the
Righteous, call the HMC office,
661-0840.
