Syria Behind Madrid
Bombing, Rabin Charges

Minister Yitzhak Rabin accused
Syria last Sunday of complicity
in the bomb attack on the El Al
check-in counter at Madrid's
Barajas International Airport
where eight people were injured.
The bomb, concealed in luggage,
exploded before it was loaded
aboard an El Al flight to Tel
Aviv.
Rabin said the man who
brought the explosive-laden suit-
case to Spain and handed it over
to an accomplice at the airport,
travelled to Spain on a Syrian
passport. "I presume the Syr-
ians knew to whom they were is-
suing the passport," Rabin said.
Meanwhile, Maj.Gen. Avra-
ham Ben-Shushan, commander
of the Israel Navy, warned at a
press conference that Syria and
other Arab states have increased
their military arsenals and
threaten Israel on the sea as well
as on land.
Ben Shushan, speaking on the
eve of Navy Day, said the Arab
states are equipping their navies
with a wide range of attack
weapons acquired from both the
Eastern and Western power
blocs. Israel finds itself in
danger of attack by sea, he said.

an alert EL AL security guard
saved many lives and averted
tragedy, according to an Israel
Radio report.
The report said the guard, who
was slightly wounded, was ex-
amining a handbag carried by
the last passenger in line waiting
to board the EL AL flight. He
noticed smoke coming from the
case and grabbed a fire exting-
uisher. He shouted to people
nearby to take cover before a
bomb in the handbag blew up,
according to the Israel radio
version of the incident.
A Spanish security agent was
among the injured but no other
Israelis were hurt, apart from
the EL AL guard. The injuries
were caused by the collapse of
the ceiling, Israel Radio said.
The Tel Aviv flight was delayed.
EL AL has refused to give out
further details.
