Jewish Agency
Alters Criteria
For Funding
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
• -:Jewish Agency will no longer
' fund non-Zionist educational in-
stitutions in Israel and overseas,
• \- the concluding session of the
Jewish Agency Assembly decid-
<3d last week.
According to the resolution,
the Jewish Agency from now on
will transfer funds to Jewish
schools, yeshivoth and other in-
stitutions "which recognize the
State of Israel, support its ex-
istence as the National home-
land of the Jewish people," and
integrate Zionist values in their
• study programs.
• -- The Mizrahi delegates to the
Assembly tried to oppose the
resolution, but eventually it was
approved by a wide majority.
However, Rabbi Yitzhak Meir,
head of the Tbrah Education
• _Department, said he would ap-
) peal the resolution before the
Zionist Executive, terming the
/\-- resolution "irresponsible and not
operational.' He said it was unac-
ceptable that an institution, in
which only 50 percent are
Zionists, would determine the
criteria for Zionism.
Leon Dulzin, chairman of the
Zionist Executive, said the
resolution must be approved by
the Executive and the Board of
Governors.

Rabin Says
Israel Ready For
Syrian Moves
Jerusalem (JTA) — Defense
• Minister Yithak Rabin declared
last week that Israel will take all
necessary precautions against a
potential attack by Syria next
• fall, possibly close to the 13th
anniversary of the Yom Kippur
War.
Rabin, addressing the annual
meeting of the Jewish Agency
Assembly here, was responding
to a report in the highly author-
itative British weekly, Jane's
Military, that Syria is planning
to attack Israel next October 14.
It is the day after Yom Kippur
and the date on which Yitzhak
Shamir will take over as Prime
Minister from Shimon Peres
\_ _under the unity coalition govern-
,' ment's rotation of power agree-
,
ment.
Rabin said Israel would not
contribute to any deterioration
of the situation with Syria but
would follow its defense policy
\ which is based not solely on
• - deterrence but on its ability to
deliver a decisive blow to its
enemies.
Senior military sources here
said they had no idea where
> Jane's information originated.
But they stressed that the
/\--- potential for war with Syria ex-
ists and that every change of
\ season is usually accompanied
; by developments which increase
/- tension.
