year, one of the most active in its
recent history. Among the high-
lights: a program on Soviet Jewry
for Christian clergy — perhaps
the first in the country; the state-
funded Jewish Life in Michigan
travelling exhibit, which pre-
miered on June 23rd at the Oak
Park Library; national exposure
of hate-group activities in the
state which saw over 200 leaders
assemble on three separate occa-
sions in the past year: the passage
into law of two state bills of inter-
est, one of which was proposed by
the ADL: the foreign disclosure
legislation, requiring universities
to identify grants from foreign
sources, introduced by Represen-
tative Maxine Berman; and a bill
outlawing paramilitary training
camps and operations designed to
foster domestic violence, intro-
duced by Representative David
Honigman; a major corporate
fund-raising honoring Governor
James Blanchard, chaired by
Jack Avignone, president of the
Auto Club of Michigan (AAA); the
Oak Park "Know Your
Neighbors" series hosted by the
ADL Director; " . . . and much
more . ." Lockman promised a
"few surprises" in the coming
year, and an even more active
agenda.
He pointed out the recent move
of the ADL office to Southfield,
"making it even more accessible
to our constituency, and putting it
at a location where we hope to
have even greater volunteer input
into our operations."

Finally, he pointed out the
promotion of the ADL's director,
Dick Lobenthal, who now has the
additional responsibility of
supervising the League's eight
midwestern offices covering 11
states. "While this will mean that
he has more duties, we expect that
it will ultimately produce more
staff in the Michigan office, per-
mitting us to do an even better job
of service to the community."
