Retarded Youngster's
Battle Ends In Israel

pared to take a retarded youngs-
ter with them." One of the stipula-
tions of the scholarship was it had
to be used in one of the summer
programs offered by the 20 De-
troit organizations represented at
the fair.
Finally, Judy received a posit-
ive response from United Syna-
gogueYouth, the youth program
of the Conservative movement.
Michael is a USY participant at
Cong. Beth Achim.

Michael Phillips

Michael Phillips will celebrate
his 16th birthday in Israel next
Tuesday. He will also celebrate
the culmination of a three-month
struggle which finally allowed
him to make the trip to Israel from
his home in Southfield.
Michael is retarded. By chance
he won the $1,000 first prize
scholarship that was offered at
the March 16 "Israel '86" summer
youth program fair at the Jewish
Community Center. The prize
started his parents, Dennis and
Judy Phillips, on a three-month
search for an organization that
would accept their retarded son
into their Israel summer pro-
gram.
"I talked to everyone," said
Judy Phillips, "both here and in
New York. But no one was pre-

"They told me to fill out an ap-
plication and they would consider
it," Judy said. After sending in the
application, Michael was inter-
viewed by Karen Knoppow,
former local USY representative,
and Michael's six-week trip with
the USY Summer Pilgrimage was
approved. Sixty-nine teens from
throughout the U.S. are par-
ticipating.
Judy said Michael is mildly re-
tarded and educable. He attends
the Jardon Education school in
Hazel Park, an Oakland County
program, and is a member of the
Boy Scouts of America. Last
weekend he went camping with
the Scouts, and then came home to
pack before leaving for Israel on
Tuesday.
"He's the right age to go de-
velopmentally," said his mother,
"but he may never be the right age
mentally. But if it works out well,
maybe the organizations will look
at kids like Michael differently
and allow others to go . . . When
we were filling out the applica-
tion, it asked about Michael's
leadership abilities. I wrote in
that if they were taking all lead-
ers then they should take
Michael. He's a go"Od follower."
