Salman Grand

Salman Grand of Franklin has
been awarded an honorary fellow-
ship conferred by Technion-Israel
Institute of Technology in Haifa,
Israel's only technological uni-
versity, according to Dr. Joseph
Epel, president of the Detroit
Chapter of the American Society
for Technion.
Grand was honored by Techn-
ion "in recognition of his extraor-
dinary leadership and dedicated
efforts on behalf of the university,
world Jewry and the State of Is-
rael."
Grand has been an active sup-
porter of Technion and a wide
spectrum of Jewish and civic
causes for more than 40 years, de-
v eloping and promoting indus-
tries in Israel and partnerships
between American industrialists
and their Israeli counterparts.
He is a life trustee of Technion's
international board of governors,
and serves on the ATS national
board and on the ATS Detroit
Chapter board. The Grands re-
cently established the Evelyn and
Salman Grand Academic Lec-
tureship Fund at Technion.
The Grands have also been
major supporters of the ATS De-
troit Chapter's projects at Techn-
ion including the MAAS Michi-
gan Dormitory, the Detroit
Mechanical and Aeronautical
Engineering Laboratories, and
the Detroit Student Aid Fund.

Local Art Student
Takes First Place

United States Representative
Sander Levin recently announced
that Kevin Bortnick of Southfield
High School has become the first
place, 17th District winner in the
1986 national Art Competition,
which was sponsored by the
House of Representatives.
As a result, Kevin, his parents
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Bortnick,
and art teacher Richard Gilbert,
joined other first place winners
from across the country yester-
day, at a ribbon cutting ceremony
and luncheon in the nation's
Capitol.
Bortnick's "Stairway of Blues"
will be displayed for one year in
the Cannon corridor leading to
the U.S. Capitol Building.
