May I express another view-
point to that reported in The
Jewish News by State Senator
Lana Pollack who was critical of
"single-issue politics," particu-
larly as related to Israel and
Zionism?
As former president of the De-
troit Zionist Federation I became
aware of two kinds of Zionists:
those -who were "generous" with
lip service, and those who regard
the survival of Israel as central to
the life of Jews everywhere.
I too am against "single-issue
politics," and I refuse to vote for
someone just because he is
Jewish. Kreisky, former premier
of Austria, and Anthony Lewis of
the New York Times are Jewish
and yet are implacable enemies of
Israel under various excuses.
There is a significant difference
between emphasizing the cen-
trality and survival of Israel and
the various local issues such as
silent prayer in schools (similar to
meditation), or even limited areas
of abortion in teenagers in favor of
teaching contraception. The
above kind of laws, even if
enacted, may be reversed anytime
by the democratic process, and
they do not constitute a clear and
present danger to Judaism .. .
God knows we have enough
enemies and cannot demand our
supporters to think as we do in all
particulars .. .
Just as the Soviets and the
Third World Mask their anti-
Semitism as anti-Zionism, so do
many of our Jews lukewarm to
Zionism hide behind "single-issue
politics."
I am unaware of any conflict be-
tween Zionism and honest
Americanism, and therefore
think of support for Israel as a
"litimus test" in spite of other
minor differences.
The significant point is that un-
like other nations, Israel, sur-
rounded by 100 million enemies,
faces total annihilation even if it
loses "one war.
Dr. Milton J. Steinhardt
I leave it to officials in the
Jewish Agency and Youth Aliyah
to answer the point-by-point
charges made in Charles
Hoffman's critical article on May
23. Hadassah, for its part, is unal-
lied with any Israeli political
party, so there are no political
interests for our continued and
enthusiastic support. We do so
with an extraordinary amount of
evaluation and re-evaluation.
In 321 Youth Aliyah installa-
tions, kibbutzim, youth villages
and day centers in Israel today,
18,500 young people between 12
and 18 are being reached. Most
are children of immigrant parents
originally from Arab lands who
need a bridge of education and
motivation before they can span
the gap which separates them
from 20th Century Israel.
One out of every ten Israelis is a
product of a Youth Aliyah experi-
ence. The 225,000 graduates of
