Poll Shows
Tehiya Party
Gains Strength

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A public
opinion poll published in Maariv
last Monday showed that the
ultra-nationalist rightwing
Tehiya Party would become the
third largest in the Knesset if
elections were held now.
According to the poll, con-
ducted by the Modi' in Ezrachi
Research Institute, Tehiya
would take vote from Rabbi
Meir Kahane's extremist Kach
Party. Kach presently has a
single seat in the 120-member
Knesset, won by Kahane's ex-
tremist Kach Party. in the 1984
elections. A poll taken last
March indicated it would mar-
shal sufficient votes for four
seats were elections held then.
The latest poll indicated two
seats for Kach while Tehiya
would gain two seats, raising its
Knesset delegation from seven
to nine.
The latest poll, compared to
the March poll, raised the Labor
Party from 50 to 51 seats at the
expense of Likud which dropped
from 32 to 31 seats. The newly
formed Liberal center party
would win one seat in the
Knesset.
Among other parties, the Na-
tional Religious Party would
win five seats if elections were
held now, the same as in March.
Two other religious parties,
Agudat Israel and Shas, would
hold steady with two and three
seats respectively but the
religious party Morasha would
drop from two to one seat:
Mapam would win two seats,
the same as last March. the
Citizens Rights Movement
(CRM) would increase from four
to five seats. The Shinui party
and the Communist party would
remain with two and six seats
respectively.

Bank Of Israel
Head Sworn In

Jerusalem (JTA) — Prof.
Michael Bruno, a leading
economist formally installed
last week as Governor of the
Bank of Israel, cautioned at the
swearing-in ceremonies that the
country is not out of the
economic woods despite the in-
itial successes of the austerity
economic program of which he
was one of the principal authors.
"There is still much to do to
stabilize the economy and one
should create conditions for a
resumption of economic
growth," Bruno said after
receiving the blessings of Presi-
dent Chaim Herzog who ap-
pointed him and of Prime
Minister Shimon Peres who sup-
ported his candidacy against
that of a fellow Laborite, Depu-
ty Finance Minister Adi
Amoral.
The Bank of Israel is Israel's
central bank and has a role
equivalent in some ways to that
of the Federal Reserve Bank in
the U.S. Bruno succeeds Moshe
Mandelbaum who resigned.
