I have the misfortune to be a
bearded religious Jew. I wear a
black "kipa," sometimes even a
black hat. Since the publication of
last week's Jewish News I hHave
three times been accused (once by
a perfect stranger) of being in
league with "bus-stop burners"
and "draft-dodgers" in Israel.
It may have been uninten-
tional, but several of the articles
(particularly the one by Ze'ev
Chafetz) constitute an unspeaka-
ble journalistic atrocity against
every Orthodox Jew in the city.
By using the fiendish term
"ultra-orthodox," you have tarred
us all with the same brush; you
have violated the civil rights of
Torah-observant Jews
everywhere. How? Well, just ask
any Conservative or Reform Jew
how he defines the religious af-
filiation of a bareheaded, clean-
shaven person who attends
synagogue daily and observes
Shabbat and kashrut. He'll re-
spond: "Orthodox." Now ask how
he defines a bearded black-hatted
religious Jew? "Ultra-Orthodox;"
of course!
You have thus insulted every
one of the thousands (yes,
thousands) of Israeli soldiers who
are bearded — and even "black-
hatted" in civilian life; worse, you
have spat on the graves of
courageous young men who gave
their lives for Israel as soldiers
and officers in the IDF, and who—
were they to come to life and walk
in the streets of West Bloomfield
— would unquestionably and un-
hesitatingly be identified as
"ultra-Orthodox" by the vast
majority of our community!

ing bus shelters as from the moon.
Yet they are unmistakably Chas-
sidic in lifestyle and dress, includ-
ing even the fur "shtreimel"
which has been the subject of your
anti-Semitic Streicher-like
poisonnous caricatures in the past
few weeks.
Inciting to violence is consid-
ered a heinous crime in the U.S.,
but your crime is even worse: You
have incited innocent, well-
meaning but impressionable
people to hate their brother and
sister Jews — without basis or
provocation. This is despicable!
