Miller Memorial Concert will be pre- sented by Temple Israel at 8 p.m. Sunday at the temple, as part of the national convention of the American Guild of Organists. The concert is open to the com- munity, and will feature organist Herman Berlinski and composer Max Janowski. Berlinski previously performed at Temple Israel during the dedi- cation of its organ in 1980. Named by Mr. and Mrs. Milton J. Miller in honor of their son, the concert has been a yearly presentation since that time. Berlinski, a Jew who has be- come a giant in a field dominated by church musicians, is former organist and music director of the Washington Hebrew Congrega- tion. He has appeared in recitals at such noted churches as Notre Dame in Paris, St. Stephens in Vienna and the Grossmunster in Zurich. His program will include his own work, The Death of Rachel with organ and voices and a work by Samuel Adler. Janowski is one of the foremost composers of Jewish music in America. His Sim Shalom, Sh' ma Kolenu and Avinu Malkenuare part of the music libraries of every synagogue and are featured in the High Holy Day liturgy of Temple Israel and scores of other Ameri- can synagogues. Music director of Chicago's K.A.M.-Isaiah Israel Congrega- tion, Janowski has written a mul- titude of works for organ and choir, has made numerous record- ings of his works and is a featured lecturer on Jewish music throughout the country. Featured as part of the Miller Concert will be Temple Israel's Cantor Harold Orbach, who will sing in a section of the concert entitled "The Organ as an Accom- panying Instrument." Also to be heard is Heidi Bloch, a young organist and recent graduate of the University of Michigan. The concert, arranged by Can- tor Orbach and the Temple Israel Music Committee, is made possi- ble by the temple's Jonathan P. Miller Memorial Concert Fund. Tickets, at no charge, are avail- able at the temple office.
