their contributions to the de-
velopment of Israel's land for
farming, housing, industry and
recreation. JNF and other groups
are accelerating their missions
programs, it must be emphasized,
because of this very sense of in-
timidation which Qaddafi and his
hooligans seek to instill in us all.
The Israelis have an expres-
sion, "davkah," which roughly
translates as "in spite of." When
PLO rockets fall in Kiryat
Shemoriah and other settlements,
community residents manifest a
"davkah" attitude by deliberately
visiting those locations and con-
tinuing normal activities. A
strong surge of tourism to Israel
among American Jews would
also exemplify this attitude; we'd
be showing the world that we
stand with our fellow Jews, and
we'd be notifying the terrorists
that their bestial actions only
strengthen our resolve to support
Israel.
Only in this way can we as-
sume the proud mantle of resis-
tance to oppression borne
throughout the ages by the
Jewish people.

Arabs Picket
Ice Cream Store

Twenty members of the
Anti-
American-Arab
Committee
Discrimination
(ADC) picketed the Haagen-Dazs
ice cream store in Birmingham
for 90 minutes last Saturday to
protest what ADC says is support
for the Jewish Defense League by
Haagen-Dazs' founder.
Sevtral Jewish customers at
the store purchased ice cream as
a counter-demonstration, and
Micki Grossman of Farmington
Hills told reporters, "An ice
cream store hasn't blown up any-
one, hasn't shot anyone. We know
from reading the papers what the
Palestine Liberation Organiza-
tion has done."
Reuben Mattus, founder of
Haagen-Dazs, sold the company
three years ago to Pillsbury. Mat-
tus is still involved in corporate
management. A spokesman for
the company told reporters that
Mattus made a contribution
"eight or nine years ago" to a
campaign by JDL founder Meir
Kahane to dramatize the plight
of Soviet Jewry. Mattus denies
any further involvement in the
JDL. TheADC alleges that the
JDL is behind bombing incidents
in New York and California in
the last year which killed one
ADC executive.
Abdeen Jabara, an ADC offi-
cial in Detroit, told a Detroit Free
Press reporter Saturday, "We're
sorry if innocent people are in-
jured in a non-violent way by our
protest. We are organizing every
peaceful way we know how to
bring this problem of violence
against Arab Americans to
people's attention."
