THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
A lifetime of devotion to Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, its sisterhood and
religious school, and to Jewish
causes in general was recalled
this week upon the death of Bea
Katzman. Mrs. Katzman died
June 14 at age 78.
A native of New York who
came to the Detroit area 75 years
ago, Mrs. Katzman was
graduated from Wayne State
University and set upon a
longtime teaching career in the
Detroit Public Schools and at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
At the synagogue she was the
past president of the sisterhood,
parliamentarian for 26 years and
served on the board of trustees.
She was an organizer of the
local branch of the Women's
League for Conservative
Judaism, was a member of its na-
tional board and was vice
president of the Central Branch.
Her Hadassah affiliation began
with membership in Junior
Hadassah and she since became a
life member of the women's
organization in which she held
many offices.
Mrs. Katzman was honored for
25 years of service to the Sinai
Hospital Guild of which she was a
founding officer and vice
president, financial secretary and
parliamentarian.
She served as a volunteer for
the Allied Jewish Campaign and
on its speakers bureau. For three
decades she volunteered as a case
worker for the Passover fund for
the needy, Moies Chetim Organ-
ization of Detroit, Inc.
Mrs. Katzman also was active
in organizations and agencies
dealing with youth. She was a
past president of the Youth
Zionist Commission, founder and
first president of the United He-
brew Schools PTO and a charter
member of Friends of Hillel Day
School.
Around the community she
was active in the Jewish Com-
munity Center Book Fair, Israel
Bonds, Detroit Round Table of
the National Conference of
Christians and Jews, Jewish
Home for Aged, and following
World War II volunteered to
teach English to new Americans.
Mrs. Katzman also was affil-
iated with the Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan, Tri-County
New York — Band leader and
clarinetist, Benny Goodman, who
earned the appellation the "King
of Swing," died June 13 at age 77.
The first top band leader to
bring black musicians onto his
bandstand, Mr. Goodman held
the reins in the field of jazz in the
1930s and 1.940s.
Born in Chicago, Mr. Goodman
first picked up a clarinet at age
10, when a local synagogue lent
instruments and gave lessons. He
later joined Ben Pollack's
Chicago band and went to
Broadway where he free-lanced
in the theaters and on radio and
in recording studios.
Producer-critic John Ham-
mond Jr. helped him start his
first big band and in 1933 Mr.
Goodman recorded his first hit
record and had a national radio
show.
It was his move to California in
the mid-1930s which boosted him
to musical prominence. Follow-
ing his success in the "swing era,"
Mr. Goodman began performing
in classical concerts.
His life was depicted in the
1955 Hollywood film, The Benny
Goodman Story, and in 1959 he
published his autobiography, The
Kingdom of Swing.
In later years, he toured the
Soviet Union and Europe and
made his last Detroit appearance
in 1981.
Bertha Roth
Bertha Roth, life member and
corresponding secretary for the
Ladies Auxiliary of Windsor's
Cong. Shaarey Zedek for 27

grated to Windsor in 1950. She
was a life member of Mizrachi
Women and active in Pioneer
Women and Friends of the
Jewish Community Center.

president of the Broadway Mar-
ket, died June 12 at age 90.
