Cohen Retires
After 50 Years

hid who I was and if they made a
mistake of who I was, I let them
know it."
Because of his determination to
protect the health of people,
Cohen instigated ASSE's re-
search into the cause of
Legionnaire's Disease. "After I
heard a doctor speak, he con-
vinced me to become interested in
the disease and I requested that
we (ASSE) give him full back-
ing," he explained. "A committee
was then formed which I did
serve on."
"I feel sad that he is leaving. I
don't care who he has helped or
taught, he has been a good
teacher and father image,"
Nussbaum explained. "I don't
think I would be replacing him
today if it had it not been for his
guidance over the years."
Nussbaum will be carrying out
the duties that Cohen did.
Although Cohen will move to
Florida in August, his friends
will never forget his services to
the community. On June 19, they
paid tribute to him at the Troy
Elks for that very reason.

Albert Cohen

June 30 will mark a special day
for Albert Cohen of Southfield.
Not only will he celebrate his
74th birthday, but he also will re-
tire as the executive director of
the Plumbing, Heating and Cool-
ing Contractors Association of
Southeastern Michigan.
Some of the many duties that
Cohen fulfilled as executive di-
rector was keeping books on the
association and recording how
the money was spent. "He was
also involved with representing
plumbing and mechanical con-
tractors and had administrative
duties such as clerical and office
work," soon to be executive direc-
tor John Nussbaum said.
When Cohen received his mas-
ter plumbing license 50 years
ago, he had numerous aspira-
tions, but none were as deep as
the two he would try to conquer.
"Above all else, my primary goals
were to open doors for Jews and
to protect the health and safety of
the people of the state of Michi-
gan," he said.
The first door Cohen opened,
after serving on many commit-
tees, came in 1978 when he was
elected president of the American
Society of Sanitary Engineering.
"More prestigious than the post
was that I was the first Jewish
president since 1906," he pointed
out.
Cohen blames discrimination
as a reason Jews did not hold
higher positions on committees
sooner. "For a guy by the name of

club house. The club house intro-
duces a complete private health
club, glass enclosed year-round
jacuzzi and a multi-level patio ac-
cented by a pool with flowing
waterfall.
The interiors of the apartments
include contemporary European

kitchen cabinetry with built-in
microwave ovens, breakfast
nooks with windows, bathroom
window with vanity makeup
counters, walk-in closets, indi-
vidual intrusion alarms, patios,
balconies and many other fea-
tures.
