Once, several years ago, she says an elderly woman slipped and fell in her bathroom but, though injured, calmly waited until someone came to check on her, after she hadn't answered her Service With Love call. Volunteers aren't quite so quick to become concerned about non-housebound clients if they don't answer their phones right away on the third of each month, Greenberg says. "We know that's the day they go to the bank to cash their checks!" Reba K., of Detroit, has been what she likes to call a "Love Connection" client for about five years now. Housebound and liv- ing alone, she says the Service With Love calls are very often the high point of her day. "Every caller is as lovely as can be," says the elderly client, whose family is made up only of a few nieces who live in the area. "Each one is a different type and we so enjoy our visits on the phone. They call me each day about ten in the morning. We talk about the weather, how we're feeling, maybe gossip about the news of the day. I spend most of my time in bed and I really, really look forward to the calls." Marilyn F. says that many of her clients are in considerable pain constantly. One woman, she says, always has the same an- swer when she asks how she's feeling: "Lousy!" "At the end of our visit on the phone, though," says Marilyn, "she never fails to thank me for calling her." She told her audience at the American Jewish Congress- sponsored meeting that they 'should "be vigilant, careful to support people who celebrate our diversity in this country." Sen. Pollack issued a warning about Christian fundamentalists in the political arena. "The Christian fundamentalist right would have us change the shape of our society." She said one of their tactics would be to strike the word "evolution" from the textbooks. She said they would also make major changes in "re- productive issues." In an interview with The Jewish News, Sen. Pollack said Jews should not take for granted the opportunities they have in this country. She fears that the opportunity for a Jewish way of life in Atherican society is nar- rowing, owing to the growing fundamentalist Christian move- ment. "There is a big move by the far right and the President of the U.S. to Christianize America. This is happening without appro- priate response by large numbers of Jews. "If the American society const- rains, constricts or diminishes the opportunity for pluralism then Jews will immediately feel that pressure." She summed up the current political situation in America as being "fragile and more vulnerable." Asked if the entry into the Presidential political ring of evangelist Pat , Robertson triggered her interest in the New Right, Sen. Pollack said it "rein- forced my concern." She said her interest in the New Right's in- volvement in politics actually stems from Reagan's election to the White House. Sen. Lana Pollack "I'm concerned about the President we've had for the past six years and how he speaks to fundamentalist groups, equating falsely that morality is Christian. American morality is not Chris- tian. American morality is secu- lar, diverse and accepting. It is partially Christian, partially Jewish and a mixture of all sorts of cultures not considered part of the New Right." She blasted fundamentalist politicians as dangerous to the Jewish people. She called politi- cians who say they speak for God, "pretenders," adding that she finds them "arrogant and basi- cally unaccepting." She resented the fact that "the President has invited (to the White House) those who would diminish the Jewish faith, those who openly spoke against the Jewish faith." On the topic of followers of Lyndon LaRouche, Sen. Pollack said she is "appalled by them." She called their appeal quite nar- row. She re-emphasized the need for pluralism in America, and urged that "it is appropriate that Jews
