Japanese Share Stereotypes Jerusalem — Japanese share some of the same stereotypes about Jews that are known in the West, but they do not neces- sarily interpret them in bla- tantly anti-Semitic ways. This was one of the observa- tions made by Akifumi Ikeda, research officer in charge of Middle East politics at the Insti- tute of Developing Economies in Tokyo and currently a visiting researcher at the Harry S. Tru- man Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Ikeda said that anti-Semitic concepts are "imported" to Japan beginning with the nega- tive image of the Jew portrayed in Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice," and later developing with the introduction of the Japanese translations of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion." These influences and later the alliance with Nazi Germany made the "international Jewish conspiracy" theory widespread among Japanese "quasi- intellectuals," said Ikeda. But in spite of the introduction of these elements into Japanese society, violent anti-Semitism has been unknown in Japan (a country with a miniscule Jewish popula- tion), he continued. Write P.O.
