Death Camps
Host Movie Set
New York — "War and Re-
membrance," the mini-series
which is now being filmed in Os-
wiecim, Poland, marks the first
time a commercial movie is being
made using both Aushwitz and
Birkenau death camps as the set-
ting.
However, this event is not tak-
ing place without some con-
troversy. According to the New
York Times, questions have been
raised about the possibilities of
desecration and responsibilities
of bearing witness. "Some Ger-
man television crews asked me
whether we were guilty of dis-
turbing the dead by permitting
lights and trucks and mess
halls," Polish director Lew Rywin
said.
For some crew members, re-
turning to the death camps
brought back painful memories.
Assistant director Branko Lustig
was a boy when he was brought
to Aushwitz and remained for
two years. "When we were first
planning to shoot here, I was
thinking, "How can we do this,
how can \ye make a picture here
on this sacred land?" he ex-
plained. "I was looking at the
people walking around. We have
our lunch breaks in the same
barracks where tens of thousands
of people were dying and we walk
on the same ground and no one
pays attention."
Actress Jane Seymore realizes
that had her Jewish Polish
grandfather not fled Poland when
he did, she might have been a vic-
tim of persecution. "I would most
probably have been in the selec-
tion line and most probably
would have been sent to the gas
chambers."
"This (movie) will show exactly
what happened here and millions
of people, who do not know or do
not believe it could have hap-
pened, will learn the truth .. .
some people are forgetting what
happened," Lustig said.

American Jews
Encouraged To
Visit Israel
New York (JTA) — Lt. Col.
Osnat Marder, head of public
relations for the Israel Defense
Force, said here last Monday
that she came to the United
States to encourage American
Jews to continue travelling to
Israel and not let Libyan leader
Muammar al-Kaddafi be their
"travel agent."
Marder, a 17 year IDF career
officer, said that her message to
American Jews is "don't raise
your hands," don't surrender to
the fear of terrorism.
Reports in Israel speak of a
growing problem in the econ-
omy because of the drop-off of
American Jewish tourists to
Israel, Mardor said. The drop in
tourism became more evident
with the onset of summer, usual-
ly the prime time for tours and
trips to Israel.
