Food & Spirits NEW FACES AMONG the regulars keep popping up . . . and this is a good sign that new res- taurants enjoy because it proves they are creating a sense of notor- iety that bring people to see for themselves. This is the case at E.G. Nick's on Maple Road, a short way from Orchard Lake Road. There are cars galore as we pull up . . . and the usual wait is not long because E.G. Nick's em- ployees are trained to seat people as quickly as possible . . . Very few people who know about E.G. Nick's leave without waiting .. . They know what's in store for them when seated . . . And many of those who didn't wait usually return. The former Wyn Schuler's locale in West Bloomfield is as different as the sun and moon .. . The intimate friendly atmos- phere is highly conducive to in- formal dining at its finest . . . and very few leave without saying hello to someone they know. As usual, the short wait was well worth it on our most recent visit to E.G. Nick's . . . Our wait- ress, Penny Brooks, was sweet, smiling, efficient and most cor- dial . . . not the rushing kind and most certainly not the unatten- tive type. If there is any fault at E.G. Nick's it is that the portions are too big . . . But then again, how can this be a fault when persons are not forced to eat every morsel on their plates? The fresh, crisp, cold salad is more than plentiful . . . no skimp- ing whatsoever . . . and the hot, homemade, soft garlic sticks are a real treat. I had the lemon chicken . . . it was wonderful . . . so tender and tasteful . . . My campanion enjoyed charbroiled salmon . . . I tasted it and could see why the expression told to me. "Best I've ever had." You won't find any canned vegetables at E.G. Nick's . . . and the fresh asparagus brought with my lemon chicken was so good that my campanion ordered a IRVING'S Specializing in one half pound Ground Rouncls, which are highly regarded by several Detroit publications. Also, fresh seafood daily, entree size salads, and a special menu from American Heart Association (which we were first in Michigan to present). It is owned by Elia Nicholas, Tony Belli and Greg Nicholas .. . Much of the credit for E.G. Nick's great showing, besides good food, • good service and reasonable prices, is the very important fac- tor of its owners always being there . . . You'll never find a time when one or the other or all of them are not there. Elia drives back and forth from the Highland House . . . Greg comes and goes from E.G. Nick's of Lapeer . . . They also have Guss's in Howell . . . And Tony can always be found at E.G. Nick's of West Bloomfield. When you talk of cleanliness in a restaurant, E.G. Nick's takes a high number . . . Same goes for the quality of food it serves. It has been open since Feb- ruary . . . and "The only time we've been slow was during Passover," says Elia. This August (or maybe Sep- tember) E.G. Nick's will also have a separate carry-out store in the strip center being built al- most next door to the restaurant . . . All foods will be cooked in the E.G. Nick's kitchen . . . and people wanting only carry-outs can go to the private one desig- nated for this purpose . . . Diners will still be able to take carry- outs directly from the restaurant. E.G. Nick's goes from seven salads to six sandwiches to six pasta dishes to lemon chicken, New York strip, bar b-q ribs, bar-b-q chicken, chicken teriyaki, greek lamb chops, liver and on- ions, lamb shish kebob, etc. .. . and seven gourmet pizzas (with smoked chicken, with duck saus- age, with shrimp, with lamb, etc.) The wood burning gourmet pizza oven, first of its. kind in greater Detroit area, brings taste of oak and fresh ingredients . . . A rotisserie turns ribs and chicken basted with family marinade. No doubt about it . . . for infor- mal dining, E.G. Nick's on Maple Road stands out among the best. WORD IS THAT A Greek- town restaurant is looking for a spot in the northwest area .. Could it be Pegdsus? GARY ROSE and his Strol- ling Strings . . . with Randy Be- lla, violin and Marty Hallup, bass . . . are at Dimitri's of Southfield, Southfield and Ten Mile .. . Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 7:30 p.m. People enjoy their string reper- toire with much relaxed dining melody. The new Dimitri's of Southfield all-you-can-eat Italian buffet every Monday night is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. THEY'VE BEEN TO- GETHER for about 20 years .. . Jerry Neely and Russell Green . . . but the duo now at Jakk's Chop House, Greenfield north of Ten Mile, with their synthesizing beat combining for a full sound, are among unsung notables in local musical circles. Jerry's musical storehouse at the piano is unlimited . . . and his keyboard styling makes for much listening and danceable music. Russell Green at 73 years old,
