The Austrian people have
made their choice, which in a
democracy was their's alone to
make. But now they must accept
— and squarely face up to — the
consequence of that choice.
Austria has elected as
president someone who was in-
volved in Nazi criminal activities
during World War II and has
tried so hard to cover up his past
that he has laid himself open to
charges that he is an outright
liar.
Accordingly, we call on the

This is being written during
my stay at the King David Hotel
on Israel's Day of Independence.
Today, we visited an army camp
and our guide (a U.S. citizen liv-
ing in Israel and doing volunteer
work) pointed out the shameful
lack of people visiting from the
United States.
I am with the American Jewish
Congress tour and there are four
other people from the Detroit
area in our group. The rabbi from
Adat Shalom is at the King
David with 20 people. in his
group. I understand that many
people from Detroit have cancel-
led out.
I am enclosing a couple of
pieces of literature with respect
to a fundraising campaign or-
ganized by the Army Radio Sta-
tion and the Association for the
Welfare of Soldiers in Israel.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if the
people from the various
synagogues that cancelled their
trip to Israel contributed the cost
of one dinner they would have
spent in Israel if they were here
for this worthy cause .. .

United States government and
all governments which uphold
morality and justice, to refuse to
receive Kurt Waldheim pending
the outcome of a thorough and
unhampered investigation of his
Nazi record.
Although the Austrian people
have chosen to ignore or overlook
Kurt Waldheim's past, it would
be a dishonor to the memories of
millions of Nazi victims for the
rest of the world to do so.

You Win Some,
You Lose Some

BY HEIDI PRESS
Local News Editor

Harry Goldberg of Southfield
couldn't have his caviar and eat it
too.
He couldn't "go for it" either.
Because of an April auto acci-
dent which left him with a
pinched nerve, Goldberg couldn't
accept the two free tickets he won
in British Airways' "Go For It,
America" sweepstakes. -
Last month, in an effort to at-
tract American tourists to
England; th airline sponsored a
contest in which 5,200 Americans
would be flown free of charge to
and from Britain. The prize also
included one night's stay free of
charge in a hotel. On the trip
there, guests were offered all the
champagne they could drink, and
all the caviar, scones and smoked
salmon they could eat.
The only stipulation was that
winners had to leave this past
Tuesday. Goldberg has not yet
healed enough from his injuries
to sustain the long flight.
He sent in four entry blanks
and was one of 98 Detroiters to
win a trip.
"I really wanted to go," he said.
"I wish I could've gotten a rain
check to go next September." He
added he is sad about having to
give up the prize — the round-
trip tickets are non-transferable
and there is no cash substitute.
But he's not going to let it get
him down.
Goldberg took the loss of his
prize in stride. "Accidents hap-
pen," he said.
