Woodward Ave. Birmingham, MI 48011 642-0460 eje NEWS Arab Injures 11 In Jerusalem Incident Jerusalem (JTA) — A Gaza Arab who injured 11 people when he rammed his Volks- wagon into a crowded suburban Jerusalem bus stop last week managed to stab two police of- ficers in an attempt to escape from custody a short time later and was himself shot and wounded by a third policeman. The bizarre incident capped two days of bombings and knife assaults in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Afule, most if not all of them terrorist-related, accord- ing to the authorities. The up- surge of violence was believed triggered by the 19th anniver- sary of the start of the Six Day War on June 5 and the celebra- tion of the reunification of Jerusalem. Ibrahim Jamil, 34, of Gaza, deliberately veered his car into the bus stop in Kiryat Yovel. Seven of the 11 injured are children and two of them were reported in serious condition. Police who arrived at the scene found a knife in the car and took Jamil to police headquarters in the Russian Compound for ques- tioning. His handcuffs removed, the suspect grabbed his knife and plunged it into the stomach of his guard, police officer Yit- zhak Silberstein. He escaped from the building, stabbing another officer, Moshe Rababchi, who tried to stop him. Officer Shlomo Cohen chased him down the street, opened fire and wounded Jamil in the shoul- der. The police have opened an investigation of the incident. An Ethiopian immigrant from Kiryat Arba was stabbed in the back in the Hebron Arab quarter while shopping. Another Israeli was shot and slightly wounded in a Nablus shop. A curfew imposed there remained in effect. Also, a bomb exploded in a Jerusalem super- market, slightly injuring two women. Agence France Presse, the French news agency, re- ceived an anonymous telephone call from a man who told them in Arab-accented English that the bombing was the work of "Force 17," a terrorist gang af- filiated with Al Fatah. An explosive described of medium size detonated in the Jezreel Valley town of Afule, causing neither casualties nor damage. The explosive had been placed near a gasoline station adjoining the local police pre- cinct house. It was the 10th bombing in Afule in the past 12 months. SCA, Lutherans Will Consult New York — Leaders of the Synagogue Council of America and the Lutheran World Federa- tion have agreed upon a number of consultations to deal with such current issues as terrorism, nu- clear disarmament, the emerging new anti-Semitism in Germany and poverty and hunger.
