ing the Senate's debate over state
funding for this Center. As an
American of Italian descent, who
has endured the sting of
stereotypes and discrimination in
my lifetime, I should have been
more sensitive.
"While my intentions in how I
voted were honest, I would cer-
tainly change how I expressed
myself. In no way did I wish to
demean Jewish people, this Cen-
ter, or those efforts being made to
memorialize the despicable
Holocaust which must never
again be repeated.
"I sincerely apologize to all
whom I've upset or offended. To
them I would like to extend the
hand of peace, understanding and
cooperation. To this end, I would
like the leaders assembled here
to know that I did vote for the
final passage of the bill, which in-
luded the funding for this Center,
and the majority will of the Se-
nate has thus spoken."
DiNello told The Jewish News
that he opposed funding of pri-
vate organizations, like the Pon-

tiac Silverdome, but his remarks
Tuesday "were not in good taste.
I'm an Italian American, and if
someone categorized all Italian
Americans as members of or-
ganized crime, I'd be upset."
Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig,
HMC executive director, accepted
DiNello's apology, told the media
that the senator "is a human be-
ing, and human beings some-
times make mistakes. The sena-
tor has apologized, and we accept
his apology warmheartedly."
Also attending the press con-
ference were Mike Must, a
member of the HMC board, and
Alvin Kushner, executive direc-
tor of the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan Detroit.
The JCCouncil had sent a letter
of protest to DiNello.
Rabbi Rosenzveig said the
issue had some positive aspects,
with the visits of DiNello and
Sen. Kirby Holmes to the HMC,
the positive media attention, and
a letter of support and a substan-
tial personal check from Gover-
nor and Mrs. James Blanchard.
