ADL Report Lists
Bias In Argentina
New York — A sharp increase
in "the tempo and scope" of
anti-Semitic activities in Argen-
tina has been reported by the
Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith.
According to the latest issue
of the agency's Latin American
Report, a major theme of the
Argentine anti-Semites is that
"Jews represent a threat to the
nation's sovereignty and that
the Radical Party, led by
President Raul Alfonsin, is in-
volved in a Jewish plot to seize
territory."
Argentine anti-Semites have
revived a new version of the in-
famous "Andinia Plan," a dis-
credited fabrication that Jews
were plotting to take over the
country.
La Nacion, a major Buenos
Aires daily, reported in January
without qualification that "the
Jewish community was studying
the possibility of establishing a
settlement of 10,000 'Israelis'
within ten years in the southern
tip of Argentina."
Dr. David Goldberg, president
of DAIA, the Jewish commu-
nity's umbrella organization,
has denounced the newspaper
account as "one of many tall
tales" promoted by anti-Semites.
DAIA, B'nai B'rith and other
organizations in the Jewish
community also protested anti-
Semitic chanting by participants
in a strike rally convened by
Saul Ubaldini, leader of the
CGT, the nation's largest union.
ADL's Latin American Report
also said that Brazil's Ministry
of Foreign Affairs is investigat-
ing the PLO's acquisition of
heavy arms manufactured in
Brazil. Brazil is selling tanks,
armored personnel carriers, and
fighter airplanes to Libya in de-
fiance of the United States
boycott. Trade between Brazil
and Libya, including military
equipment and high technology
products, will total $1 billion or
more in 1986.
After the earthquake in
Mexico, some newspapers
printed Streicher-like political
cartoons and anti-Semitic arti-
cles accusing Jewish factory
owners of being "more eager to
rescue their machinery and
merchandise than the workers
who were trapped or killed."
On a more positive note, the
ADL report cites increased
numbers of Jews serving in
elected and appointed posts in
Argentina, Brazil and other
countries; an exchange of resi-
dent ambassadors between Is-
rael and Honduras and the re-
turn, after 16 months, of an am-
bassador to the embassy of El
Salvador in Jerusalem.
