resolved the aliyah problem if he
had not become merely the
philanthrophy dedicated. The
needs for funds are surely press-
ing and demanding, often to ex-
treme. But the very ideal of
Zionism, the invitation to halut-
ziut, the glory of pioneering, ap-
pear to have failed in capturing
the imagination of Jewish lead-
ership and of receiving due em-
phasis in the schools.
The Israelis would have
learned better from such a state
of affairs and their youth could
have become pursuers of the
deals of their progenitors.
Is the cause defeated? Not by a
long shot! An idea like Zionism
that began as a minority in

"Letter from Israel" in The
New Yorker (July 29, 1985), re-
ported:
"According to a poll com-
missioned -by the Van Leer
Jerusalem Foundation (a pri-
vately financed research insti-
tute), as many as 40 percent of
secondary-school pupils claim
that they support the views of
Rabbi Meier Kahane's party
(the percentage in the reli-
giously Orthodox schools was
said to be higher). Another
poll by the same foundation
showed that only a third of the
15-to-18-year-old youngsters
interviewed displayed 'consis-
tent democratic tendencies'
(i.e., endorsed the existing
government system).
"The remainder were more
or less totalitarian in their
attitudes, especially toward
their Arab fellow-citizens.
Some 44 percent favored legis-
lation to prohibit criticism of
the government's foreign and
domestic policies; 42 percent
favored curtailing the civil
rights of non-Jewish citizens;
37 percent favored curtailing
the rights of Christians; 47
percent felt that Muslims
should not attain senior posi-
tions in government service;
60 percent said that Arabs
should not be entitled to full
civil rights ..."
And recently, Givat Haviva,
the educational center of- the
Artzi Federation of 86 kibbut-
zim, reported that "phrases
first heard in Fascist Europe
— 'If democracy endangers
our people, then we must
forego democracy' — now
issue from the lips of Israeli
youths."
There is nothing to be proud of
in these revelations. A Jewish
state must be highest goaled. Its
ethics must not be tampered
with.
There has to be justice on the
religious level and in the treat-
ment of non-Jews. These - are not
debatable aspects of issues that
have besmirched the Jewish
character.
Who is at fault?
Are the Israelis guilty in a
permissiveness that admits "sin-
fulness"?
Are the American Jews espe-
cially being put to the test in the
compulsion to find solutions?
There are no doubts on both
ends.
The American Jew might have

Jewry pleading for a hearing
from the Great Barons who
fought it bitterly, and oyercame
the curses from it own ranks, will
live on. It survived enemies upon
within Jewish ranks and among
enemy non-Jews and will live on
and will surely soon again spread
the message of justice for Israel
and high goals for mankind.
There is encouragement in the
firmness with which
Conservative-Reform ranks are
battling the regrettable Israeli
fundamentalism. It proves that
the interest for high goals is not
dead.
Zionism will surely remain in-
destructible. Israel will hopefully
erase the guilt and the many
sins. Diaspora must be led to no-
bility in the testing to which it is
submitted. Jewry can not submit
to pessiMism.

Neo-Nazi's Past
Being Examined
New York — The Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith has asked the U.S. Justice
Department's Office of Special
Investigations to initiate an in-
vestigation against George Dietz,
an anti-Semitic propagandist
now living in West Virginia.
He is probably best known
today as the prime mover of Lib-
erty Bell Publications, the
largest anti-Jewish propaganda
mill in the U.S. Deportability de-
pends on whether investigation
establishes that Dietz actively
took part in Nazi persecutions
during World War II.
