NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS:

swer questions. Faxon, however,
bristled at the explanation.
"The presentation was made to
the Department of Management
and Budget, not to the legisla-
ture. A la of .those things they
accept because the DMB put it
into the bill. They are applying a
standard to one group that they
are not applying to other groups.
Why scrutinize one line that has
the name 'Jewish' in it, and not
scrutinize others?"
A state appropriation of
$30,000 for the Jewish War Vete-
rans was included in the budget
last year for the first time. A Pre-
requisite for funding is to be a
Congressionally chartered organ-
ization, according to JWV state
commander Irvine Keller, and
that happened within the last
two years.
Keller said the state funds are
used to augment the JWV's gen-
eral program of visiting veterans'
hospitals throughout Michigan,
decorating grave sites, maintain-
ing the JWV Memorial Home and
its diplays in Southfield, giving
scholarships to veterans' descen-
dants and offering other services
for veterans. According to Faxon,
more than $1 million is appropri-
ated for state veterans' groups
each year.
Does the Jewish community
have a problem in the legisla-
ture? Faxon agrees with Ber-
man's assessment that there are
members of the Senate and
House "who are insensitive."
"What we see is a reflection of
stereotypes," he said. "There are
some people here who have little
contact with Jews, or don't
realize that some of us are Jews."
As for DiNello's remarks on the
Senate floor and the attack on the
JWV appropriation, "I didn't ex-
pect this to happen at all."
Sen. Lana Pollack (D-Ann Ar-
bor) also concurs with Berman's
assessment of prejudice. "The
legislature is a very representa-
tive body, and reflects the prej-
udices out in society. I don't think
Sen. DiNello misspoke himself. I
think he believes what he said
. . . It didn't seem particularly out
of character for Sen. DiNello . . ."
"I am disappointed but not sur-
prised. I hope he learned some-
thing from it. At least he learned
that good politics demanded an
apology — I hope it came from
the heart."

DiNello's
Apology

Sen. Gilbert DiNello (D-East
Detroit) read the following
sta' ement to a press conference
Friday at the Holocaust Memo-
rial Center.
"I would like to make a state-
ment concerning some floor re-
marks I made Tuesday of this
week pertaining to state funding
for the Holocaust Memorial Cen-
ter.
"I want to offer my personal
apology to Rabbi Rosenzvieg, my
colleagues in the Legislature
and, above all, to all Jewish citi-
zens for the remarks I made dur-
