Self-Interest
Beat British
Jerusalem — It was British
self-interest rather than Politi-
cal or military pressure which
brought about the British deci-
sion to evacuate Eretz Israel in
1948, said a. Hebrew University
of Jerusalem political scientist
at a conference held at the uni-
versity this month. on the
"Struggle for the Establishment
of the State of Israel."
"The strategic importance of
Eretz Israel to the British was
declining during that period,"
said Dr. Gabi Sheffer. "This,
when added to other considera-
tions, such as the lack of Ameri-
can support for British policy
and economic difficulties at
home, led to the British decision
that it was no longer worth its
while to maintain its presence
in Palestine," he said.
Others participating in the
conference differed with Dr.
Sheffer's views, maintaining
that the political and/or armed
struggle against the British led
to their decision to leave.
