Staff Report
Increased sensitivity to the
" needs of all the constituencies
served by United Hebrew
Schools was the top priority
listed by incoming president Dr.
Barbara Goodman at the annual
meeting of UHS and the
Midrasha-College of Jewish
Studies on Tuesday.
Dr. Goodman, in a brief ac-
ceptance speech after her elec-
tion, said UHS must expend
more time and effort to make its
school programs efficient, _while
at the same time expand its ef-
forts to serve the community at
large as the educational arm of
the Jewish Welfare Federation.
Her other priorities included
better communications, long-
term reorganization of the ad-
ministration, emphasis on re-
taining students after bar and
bat mitzvah, and outreach to
youngsters not attending Jewish
schools.
Ed Shifrin was elected chair-
man of the Midrasha and also
gave a brief response, stressing
the continuing education needs
of the Jewish community.,
Dr. Paul Feinberg, who com-
pleted three terms as UHS
president, gave a brief review of
the work of the UHS board's
committees, and thanked the
board members, staff and com-
munity for their support.
Eighteen UHS students were
awarded 1986 Senior Awards by
the UHS Woman's Auxiliary to
assist them in making trips to
Israel this summer. The 18 are
Susan Allen, Eric Bronstein,
Marci Finkelstein, Howard
Freedland, Avram Friedman,
Cindy Friedman, Michelle
Hubert, Freya Katkowsky, Jef-
frey Kaufman, Michael Nodler,
Brian Rosenblatt, Julie Sacks,
Michael Sasson, Theresa
Shimansky, Todd Stearn, Larry
Tepman, Oren Taub and Miriam
Weiner.
The meeting concluded with a
45-minute slide presentation by
UHS Superintendent Rabbi
Jerry Teller and his wife Judy
on their Purim visit to the
Soviet Union and meetings with
Jewish refuseniks.
"What I thought was prop-
aganda turned out to be worse
than anything I ever imagined,"
Dr. Teller said, describing the
plight and isolation of the re-
fuseniks and the general living
conditions of the Soviet people
under Communism. "Russia is a
place of mirrors, George Or-
well's Animal Farm, where the
truth is never spoken."
The Tellers showed slides of
Moscow, Leningrad and Kiev,
and described the problems of
long-term refuseniks in support-
ing their families. The children
of refuseniks, the Tellers said,
in some cases are beginning to
> rebell at their status. Children
marrying can jeopardize the
entire family's exit status, creat-
ing further psychological stress
for the family.
