; rg rj : rg New York (JTA) — Passage of an arms bill for Saudi Arabia is important, according to a Mobil Advertisement on the op-ed page of the New York Times last week, because it would serve "vital American_ interests in the strategic Middle East." The advertisement cited an editorial that appeared in the Times in early May that pro- posed that the sale would "... counteract the influence of Iran and Syria by assisting Iraq and Jordan," and called Saudi Arabia useful friends. Mobil called on the Senate to vote for America by voting for the arms bill and supporting President Reagan's veto of the Congressional resolution to block the sale. They have allowed the wealth and con- tentment of American Jews to overwhelm their sense of respon- sibility to the Jewish people and collective survival. These leaders are prepared to tackle any issue — from the sale of AWACs to Saudi Arabia to prayer in the schools — except for the real one. In fact, most have simply come to accept the disappear- ance of more than a million Jews, on their watch, as in- evitable. No Jew has an obligation to remain Jewish, or to care if his children do. But, for the leaders of the Jewish people, in Israel and the Diaspora, Jewish collec- tive survival is the primary issue. For decades, they have sought ways of ensuring this survival in America. Professor Bracchi's statistics show that they have failed. Under present conditions, the future of the Jewish people can be assured only in Israel. Those Jewish leaders — in Israel as well as the Diaspora who pretend otherwise — because it is popular or easy or expedient — will one day have to face the judgement of history. ) 5500 Crooks Rd. at 1-75 • Troy Reservations Advised 879-2100 THE ORIGINAL 352-7466 Specializing In: FRESH SEAFOODS, FINE STEAKS AND GOURMET VEALS the best pancakes 6) omelets in town JUST E.
